This position is located within the Engineering Service at the Bath VA Medical Center in Bath, NY.
Duties
The major duties include but are not limited to:
Utilizes the shortest and best routes from facility to destination, recognizes hazardous conditions and changes routes to avoid same;
Handles controls for proper driving, backing, starting and stopping and must know the width, length, height and weight of vehicle to properly judge clearance, stopping distance, turning radius and the safest distance to stay from any vehicle being followed;
Loads cargo with heavy articles on the vehicle bed and build the cargo for good support to prevent shifting or falling of cargo;
Operates 17 through 52 passenger buses, one-half ton pickup through 15-ton gross vehicle weight (GVW) trucks, both standard and automatic transmission, various types of snow removal equipment with hydraulic attachments such as power tail gates, compaction equipment, etc., vehicles having up to 10 forward speeds and up to 4 driving wheels;
Operates ambulances both large and small used for emergency transport, sedans, station wagons and vans;
Transports patients for specialized treatment to local hospitals and/or nursing homes for admittance or treatment;
Communicates and assists patients/residents that are being transported;
Operates large trucks to transport laundry, food, refuse and other cargo;
Completes trip forms, computes mileage reading on log sheets and trip tickets;
Transports infectious waste to local and distant disposal sites;
Makes minor repairs such as changing tires and minor adjustments to reach destination;
Loads and unloads patients and/or residents (when not accompanied by a nursing assistant), wheelchairs or others;
Drives assigned vehicle through all kinds of traffic, on streets, roadways, over rough terrain depending on the type of vehicle and the type of duty the vehicle is used in a safe and prudent manner; and,
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.
Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications
Physical Effort and Work Conditions: Requirements of this job requires that you have no physical limitations in that 85% of duties require moderate to strenuous physical effort and dexterity of foot, hand and mind at all times. While operating the laundry truck. you must be able to handle 50-to-100-pound bags and move carts weighing up to 1800 pounds consistently during work schedule while transporting patients. Required at times to lift patients from wheelchairs to vehicles and in reverse. Required to load and unload heavy patients by stretcher when using an ambulance and will be required to lift heavy objects weighing up to 100 pounds while loading and unloading cargo.
While performing your duties, required to work under inclement conditions exposed to rain, snow, freezing conditions and extreme high temperatures; while operating trucks, cars, lawn equipment, snow removal equipment and other emergency conditions for long periods of time; when loading or unloading cargo. Drives in all kinds of weather on slippery and wet roads, snow and rainstorms and in all kinds of traffic conditions. Exposed to the possibility of serious accidents, cuts, sprains and broken bones while loading or unloading cargo. Will be in close contact with veterans, members and their families, some of whom may be difficult. Must be courteous, patient and tactful at all times. Required to handle contaminated waste, refuse and many other unpleasant items. Subject to call back duty for snow removal, icy or hazardous conditions and /or emergencies such as ambulance trips or other emergency trips using cars, station wagons, etc. as necessary during evenings, nights, weekend and/or holidays. Required to obey written and in person safety procedures and when unsure of safety procedure or unsure of how to proceed safely, will contact the supervisor for instructions.

Commercial Driver's License (SCREEN OUT): A current and valid state-issued Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement is required for this position. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs, therefore; please do not submit a copy of your CDL driver's license with your application package. If an interview is requested, you will be required to provide a copy of your current and valid state-issued Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License with Passenger Endorsement.
