The primary purpose of the position is to perform seasonal gardening tasks either done outside or in a greenhouse. In order to accomplish the gardener duties the incumbent must on a regular and recurring basis also operate light duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds (such as pick-up trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, etc...) to transport personnel, material, or equipment to work sites located on the park.

Duties

The selectee of this position identifies grasses, weeds, shrubs and trees. Provides care and maintenance appropriate for specific grass or plant species. Able to distinguish between native and non-native plant species and informs the supervisor of non-native invasions. Prepares seed beds in disturbed construction areas. Lays sod, sows seed, places mulch to maintain or restore lawn apperances. Mow's, waters and rakes lawns, road shoulders and trails. Prunes shrubs and trees for uniform appearance. Pulls and / or treats non-native plant species. Operates gasoline and diesel powered vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of less than 10,000 pounds and capable of carrying loads weighing less than 1 ton. Included are pickups, small tracktors, small utility vehicles (Daihatsu, Gator, Ranger, etc.), riding lawn mowers and riding power lawn sweepers. Scrubs, strips, waxes, dusts, mops and polishes floors. Scours lavatories, stool and urinals. Washes walls, room particians, light fixtures and windows. Vacuums and shampoos carpets; emties ash trays and wastebaskets; sweeps and hoses outside sidewalks and steps; polishes furniture and exibit cases. Fills soap and tissue dispensers. Replaces light bulbs. Performs ground and trail maintenance duties on paved and unpaved trails, including washing, sweeping, filling holes, checking hand rails and replacing trail lights. Performs miscellaneous labor duties such as digging ditches; installing fences; repairing corrals;hauling furniture and supplies; picking up litter; cleaning rain gutters, mixing / hauling concrete may also work as flag persons on road projects and lift materials up to 100 pounds. Must be able to safely operate gasoline and diesel powered equipment including rotary self-propelled mowers, weed trimmers, chain saws and jackhammers. Able to lift and move objects over 50 pounds unassisted and can carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance.
