The position is a new position for the Social Work Service Line, Birmingham VA Medical Center located in Birmingham, AL. The Social Work Service line is a new service at the Birmingham VA that encompasses six sections, including Inpatient, Outpatient, OEF-OIF, Healthcare for Homeless Vets, Non-Institutional Care, and Caregiver Support Programs.

Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to: Provide a variety of administrative, technical, and clerical support functions to the Social Work Service. Stays abreast of directives and instructional material pertaining to administrative practices and clerical procedures within the department. Prepares and assembles employee performance appraisals, privilege renewal applications, license renewals, personnel actions, travel orders, and computer access requests. Schedules meetings, arranges appointments and post reminders to keep staff informed. Responsible for documenting committee meeting minutes for Social Work Staff Meetings. Maintains ready-reference files of frequently consulted regulations, policies, rosters and other materials. Establishes and maintains lists and registers and referral information. Provides advice and instruction to the other support clerical staff on employee education and training requirements. Participates in the analysis and interpretation of workload. Consolidates information for various reports in accordance with established procedures and deadlines. Serves as the time keeper and completes other administrative tasks as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned by leadership. Work Schedule: Monday- Friday (Time of day to be discussed with management)Telework: VA supports the use of telework as a way to help attract and retain talented individuals in public service, increase worker productivity, and better prepare the agency to operate during emergencies. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/18/2023. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: providing administrative, technical and clerical support for the management of various programs; Identifying issues, problems and seeking solutions in accordance with applicable rules, policy or regulations; Collecting, compiling and tracking data and analyze statistical information; maintaining files, databases and utilizing various software programs; timekeeping duties for service; Ability to listen and record meeting notes; preparation and processing of variety of correspondence; Maintain calendar and generate reports. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit. Proficiency Requirements: Clerk-Typist, Office Automation Clerk/Assistant, Clerk-Stenographer, Data Transcriber, and Positions with Parenthetical Titles of (Typing), (Office Automation), (Stenography), or (Data Transcription)Office Automation (OA) Assistant or Clerks MUST be able to type 40 words per minute. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position:Administration and ManagementCommunicationsCustomer Service (Clerical/Technical)Manages ResourcesWriting Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items like papers or books.
