The incumbent serves as the Interior Plants Manager reporting directly to the Head of Horticulture Services Division, under the Office of the Facilities Management. The Division of Horticulture Services (AFM-HS) is responsible for the maintenance of 10 acres of exterior landscape around the East and West Buildings as well as the 6-acre National Gallery of Art (NGA) Sculpture Garden.

Qualifications
Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-0437-13.
For this position,Specialized experience is at least one year of experience (combined), equivalent in responsibility to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, managing all horticultural activities horticulture department for a major organization or institution.
Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria: Must have at least a bachelor’s degree in horticulture, or closely related field.

Mastery knowledge of and demonstrated skill in horticulture as well as a though understanding of sciences such as biology, botany, chemistry, plant physiology, plant taxonomy, plant pathology, entomology, and agronomy.
Mastery knowledge of proper growing conditions for interior plants sufficient to prepare and implement a maintenance schedule for pruning, fertilizing, spraying, and watering of interior plants in unusual or challenging environments.
Demonstrated ability and skill in floral arranging, to include knowledge of varied techniques and cut flowers and ability to design and construct arrangements for a wide variety of Gallery events.
Ability to train staff as required.
Knowledge of contacts, vendors, sources for plant material, cut flowers and supplies both locally and nationally sufficient to plan, purchase, and execute installation of displays for temporary exhibits and special event needs.

Education
Basic Requirements

Degree: horticulture; or a related discipline of basic plant science that included at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, of which at least 16 semester hours were in horticultural subjects such as those dealing with the breeding, care, management, production, and post harvest handling of horticultural crops.

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in horticulture or a related discipline of basic plant science that included course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Evaluation of Education: Courses in botany, plant physiology, plant taxonomy, plant pathology, genetics, agronomy, horticulture, and similar courses may be used to meet the 30-semester-hour requirement in basic plant sciences.
The 16-semester-hour requirement in horticulture includes course work in basic horticulture and course work related to any of the recognized subject-matter fields of horticulture, i.e., fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, nursery work, seed production, or course work in related areas of science, such as micro-biology, entomology, plant pathology, plant physiology, or genetics that is directly related to horticultural work.
