Duties
This job opportunity is for a Materials Handler positions located in the Support Services Branch, National Processing Center (NPC), U.S. Bureau of the Census located in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The function of the section is to provide a variety of services including supply, warehousing, shipping and receiving, forklift, labor and packing, and property management for the Support Services Branch.
This position is included in the bargaining unit.
The individual selected for this position will perform the full range of duties for multiple warehousing positions including those tasks performed by a material handler, packer, and forklift operator and will be responsible for:
Receiving, locating, storing, issuing, inventorying, staging, shipping printed matter, and equipment in accordance with established procedures.
Utilizing the computer system to verify and print requests, verifying invoices and similar receiving documents to compare the markings, quantities, and types of material with the actual material received.
Sorting, arranging, tagging, and marking material received on pallets, and in bins, then stores the items on shelving and pallet tracking or uses a pick list or other instructions to pull material and deliver to a specific location.
Verifying and reporting the findings from physical inventories, such as: gains/losses or expired material.
Adhering to all applicable safety rules and practices such as: lifting, operating within the forklift s capabilities; preventing tipping and ensuring trucks are chocked before entering; utilizing horn whenever exiting a truck or approaching a corner; utilizing proper dock plate when loading or unloading trucks; ensuring material placed in pallet racking is properly centered and balanced; taking care not to hit pallet racking or overhead obstructions when moving in narrow aisles; exercising extreme caution whenever operating in employee occupied areas; ensuring materials are packed in priority order while adhering to all applicable safety rules, regulations and operating practices.
Attending periodic forklift safety training and completing recertification in accordance with OSHA safety standards every three years; reporting maintenance and safety problems and accidents to the supervisor.
Tour of Duty: Monday through Friday, hours range from 7:00 am to 4:30 p.m. Alternate Work Schedule. Alternate Work Schedule is an 80-hour biweekly basic work requirement that is scheduled in less than 10 days; i.e., eight 9-hour days/nights, one 8-hourday/night, and one day off. Various flexible work schedules are available.
