Duties
You will provide consultation, advice, assistance and limited scope representation to active duty and retired members of U.S. Armed Forces and their dependents and others entitled by statute or regulation to military legal assistance.
You will ensures that all legal assistance services provided by attorneys and non-attorney staff are accurate, timely, responsive, comprehensive, and comply with legal requirements, office standards and Navy regulations
You will serve as supervisory attorney over new Judge Advocates, legalmen, and civilian paralegal staff.
You will remain current on state laws and statutes.
You will provide legal assistance services in the following subject areas: wills and estates, real property renters' rights, Service members Civil Relief Act (SCRA), Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). Continued below
You will provide legal assistance services in the following subject areas: immigration and naturalization, real property purchases, sales, and leases, civil suits, taxes, nonsupport and indebtedness, consumer affairs. Continued below
You will provide legal assistance services in the following subject areas: deployment/mobilization preparation, step-parent adoptions and name changes, domestic relations, including divorces, legal separation , annulment, custody. Continued below
You will provide legal assistance services in the following subject areas: protective orders, child support, spousal support, paternity, and guardianships, disaster relief support and advice, and exceptional family member program legal services.
You will provide training and subject matter mentoring to continuously develop the abilities of all assigned legal assistance personnel to proficiently perform a wide range of legal and paralegal duties.
You will serve as an information clearinghouse for legal assistance staff.
You will maintain a current log of pertinent federal, state, local and Navy references, instructions and regulations and regularly communicate and disseminate new information to other legal assistance staff.
You will establish and maintain an effective law program, develop materials and programs to educate Service members and their families about the availability of legal services, need for legal advice before incurring legal obligations, and rights.
Requirements

Qualifications
Must have a J.D. Degree from an ABA accredited law school, be a member in good standing of the Virigina bar, and preferably have a minimum of three years post-law school legal experience as either a military judge advocate or in private practice providing representation concerning at least one of the core subject areas listed in the fifth bullet in the "Duties / Responsibilities" section.
Note: This position will be significantly focused on wills and estate planning. Attorneys with experience in this area should explicitly identify such experience, though prior estate planning experience is not a requirement.
An official certificate issued within the past 3 months showing applicant is a member in good standing of the Virigina Bar or sufficient proof that the same has been requested with the appropriate licensing authority. Additionally, a Certificate or Letter of Good Standing with the Virigina Bar that was issued within the past 3 months must be presented to the hiring manager within 15 calendar days of notification of selection.
Upon selections the following documents will be requested:
An official transcript of the applicant's law school record together with an official statement of his/her relative standing in his/her class. However, if the individual has been a member of the Bar for 5 years or more, the transcript requirement may be waived.
An official statement that his/her fitness to practice law or his/her conduct as an attorney have never been challenged. If either his/her fitness or conduct has been challenged, an official statement concerning the facts and circumstances together with any explanation that the applicant himself/herself may wish to submit.
Selectees may be required to successfully complete a probationary period, must have or be able to obtain a Secret Security Clearance, and meet all certification requirements (depending on the position to be filled) prior to appointment. This position may require successful completion of a physical examination, pre-employment drug test, and or completion of the COVID 19 vaccine and booster vaccine.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
Education
Must have a J.D.
