You will serve as an INSULATOR in the PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT, PIPE SHOP of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Duties
You will work with a variety of insulation materials such as spun glass, foam, plastic, fiberglass, magnesia, etc.
You will fabricate portable, removal or replaceable sections of insulation for valves and similar fittings to with access must be provided.
You will secure insulation in place with wires, bands, fasteners, or adhesives.
You will lay out and lift chipboard templates and then cuts, fabricates, and installs acoustical insulation and thermal hull insulation by cementing or holding in place by using gun-welded studs or adhesive.
You will saw or shear sections of insulation to size and trim them to fit, using both hand and power-operated tools.
You will take bulk samples to test for asbestos content of installed insulation.
Requirements
- Must be a US Citizen.
- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

- This is a bargaining unit position.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION such as:
Measuring and identifying precise dimensions of irregular shaped valves, flanges, and other unique structures;
Developing and laying out patterns, cutting, forming, joining, assembling, and installing all types of insulating materials;
Interpreting blueprints, drawings, oral, and written instructions to construct insulation projects to desired shapes, joints, thickness, shrinkage, and thermos-expansion;
Measuring, cutting, trimming, and fitting insulating materials in accordance with detailed oral or written procedures;
Applying cleanliness, safety and health requirements.
