This position is located at the VA Medical Center in Togus, ME. The primary purpose of the Motor Vehicle Operator position is to provide transportation and patient care for patients traveling to treatment sites within the community and other VA Medical Centers.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include:
Operate light duty vehicles such as Sedans, mini vans, 8 passenger vans, pickup trucks, and light duty construction utility vehicles. Patient transport vehicles to pick up and transport patients under nonemergency conditions from one location to another such as from an airport to a hospital or from one hospital to another.
Drive on public roads at controlled speeds to ensure the patient's comfort.
Secures cargo to prevent damage to contents during transport and ensures that the vehicle is not loaded beyond the maximum capacity.
Refuels vehicles as needed prior to transport.
Protects materials, supplies and equipment from the elements.
Vehicle transport includes medical and office supplies, equipment, and mail over Federal, State and Country roads in all traffic conditions, on specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules.
Performs routine safety and maintenance checks on the vehicle to include, but not limited to, the addition of fuels or lubricants and the checking of tire pressure.
Maintains cleanliness and professional appearance of both the in and outside of the vehicle.
Completes all maintenance service records to document activities.
Provides courtesy rides to staff, Veterans, and visitors as needed to and from parking lots or garages and/or to and from buildings on the facility campus.
Assists in areas like the warehouse to receive, store, and move materials and equipment.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00am-2:30pm/7:00am-3:30pm/8:00am-4:30pm

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: While operating motor vehicles, the position exerts light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. May need to exert effort to make emergency repairs, such as changing a flat tire. Frequently, bends, lifts and carries equipment, supplies or materials up to 40 pounds. Work is executed mostly outside operating vehicles in all kinds of traffic and weather on public roads and on the facility campus. The position is exposed to the possibility of traffic hazards. The position is exposed to dirt, fumes, grease and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, falls and broken bones when loading and unloading the vehicle.

Driver's License Requirement: Must possess a current and valid state-issued driver's license?
