Duties

Service one or more organizations submitting requests for background checks and investigations for individuals that have regular contact with children. Make final adjudicative decision determining whether individuals are suitable for positions involving regular contact with children. Interpret regulations, policies, and directives to inform assigned organizations of correct operating procedures, new policies, and adjusted directives. Responsible for case progress to keep cases moving and processed timely, as well as to provide serviced organizations updates on case status. Respond to general personnel security questions, researching outside agency policies and procedures, and reaching out to outside organizations to ensure assigned organizations know exactly how to proceed with all inquiries. Assign cases to contractors for review and processing, and review contractor processing of initial and reverification child services background investigations for timeliness and accuracy. Analyze and evaluate the official electronic suitability file for everyone requiring a background check in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The employee must take and pass the Essentials of Suitability Adjudication Program (ESAP) course.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with reviewing, submitting, and processing complex requests for background checks and investigations for individuals having regular contact with children; utilizing a variety of automated security systems; analyzing and interpreting derogatory events within background investigations; responding to a variety of personnel security questions and/or issues; and providing training to agency/staff regarding security clearance/investigation processes. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.
