The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an Air Force Engineering and Technical Services (AFETS) senior technical advisor on complex and sophisticated integrated avionics parts, assemblies. components, and sub-systems on weapon systems used in the 58th Special Operations Wing.
Duties
Serves as a technical expert advisor to senior leaders and maintenance technicians in the maintenance, operation, and training related to complex and sophisticated Integrated Avionics components, Navigational aids, sub-systems, and equipment such as (but not limited to): Digital Fuel Quantity Indicating System, IDASS/MATT, Global Positioning System, Automatic Flight Control System, Forward Looking Infrared System (FLIR), etc.
Determines capabilities of local flightline and in-shop maintenance personnel and requirements for training.
Receives, studies, analyzes, and submits data of a technical nature on any of the aforementioned avionics components, sub-system, etc. and participates in developing recommendations for system modifications with complete justification thereof.
Assigned Unit Technical Assistance: Provides technical assistance to field units in resolving complex integrated avionics system/equipment problems.

- This position may require frequent travel or long periods away from the normal duty station to include CONUS or overseas and may include remote or isolated sites.
- Based on operational necessity, TDY away from home base in support of other AF units requires travel by military air.
- The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays and/or overtime.
- Required to operate a government motor vehicle and must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
- Must meet physical requirements for immediate worldwide deployment, remote from adequate medical facilities, for extended TDY.
- This position may require employee to work under adverse environmental conditions.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Administrative and Management Positions, Equipment Services Series 1670.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-11, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes working as a skilled mechanic or maintenance worker, sales or service engineer, or planner or estimator in a technical group dealing with manufacture, utilization, repair, or operation of equipment. Reviewing and applying technical specifications and requirements. Analyzing equipment and forecasting spare parts requirements. Reading and interpreting engineering change orders, equipment requisitions, shop orders, and work orders. Analyzing contract specifications and examining pertinent equipment to determine if specifications are met. Analyzing or supervising maintenance, repair, or production operations to determine methods of improvement. Knowledge of a wide range or maintenance concepts, principles, and practices related to the aforementioned avionics/airborne electronic subsystems/equipment, including those requiring extensive specialized training and experience. Specialized practical and theoretical knowledge of assigned avionics/airborne electronic subsystems/equipment and skill in applying this knowledge to difficult and unusual situations.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge of a wide range of maintenance concepts, principles and practices of avionics/airborne electronic systems and skill in applying this knowledge to difficult and f complex assignments.
Skill in identifying and analyzing complex technical problems lid developing innovative solutions. Skill in providing technical advice in terms of oral and written briefings, reports, and recommendations to senior leadership and maintenance technicians.
Skill in developing interpersonal relationships, maintaining good working relationships, and working cooperatively as a member of a team.
Skill in analyzing and interpreting engineering drawings, technical manuals, and technical data.
Ability to plan, organize, and reprioritize work to meet changing deadlines. Ability to develop and conduct training to ensure proper maintenance of assigned systems/equipment.
Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing. Skill and ability to use personal computers and associated, equipment - does not require a qualified typist.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
