This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Duties
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
Performs routine radiographs, portable exams, fluoroscopy, and OR imaging.
Performs routine administrative procedures for maintaining accurate imaging records. Receives and interprets all radiology requests. Inputs pertinent radiology information into computer. Schedules appointments, processes exam requests, and registers patient exams, cancels and case edits exams in the Radiology Information System (RIS).
Accurately utilizes PACS for acquisition, transmission, storage, and review of images, performs QC of all completed studies to ensure timely and accurate interpretation by the Radiologist.
Reviews new developments in the field and recommends to supervisor those that would improve the operation of the section.
Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients and staff while applying elements of the As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) Principle. This is including appropriate use of lead aprons, lead gloves, lead shields, collimation, and distance management. Film badges are worn by the radiographer to assure compliance to radiation regulations.
Interviews patient obtaining pertinent medical history and precise medication usage as it pertains to the examination being performed. Explains to patients the rationale of procedures and instructions on how to complete the procedure.
Ability to vary tests or treatment procedures as needed to compensate for patient's individual medical conditions and body habitus.
Explains examinations to be performed to patients so they understand the purpose of the study as well as any requirements of the patients, so they are thoroughly understood. May be required to monitor vital signs, recognize allergic reactions, and initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Inventory Control: Ensures that adequate quantities of supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt and inventory control. Assures that X-ray procedure rooms are stocked with necessary supplies always with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. Assists in determining costs for specific exams, and projecting costs for budgetary purposes. Coordinates new product evaluation. Recommends methods and products to reduce costs and/or increase quality.
Technologist Staff Scheduling: Determines staffing requirements based on past, present, and future workload patterns and oversees the development of the weekly/monthly schedules. Oversees the organization of staff work assignments, including lunch and break rotations. Reports absences and tardiness to Chief Technologist. Oversees the reassignment of techs, if necessary, because of call-ins or increased/decreased workload. Approves leave requests and vacation schedules, to maintain optimal staffing levels.
Staff Training: Trains or supervises training of new technologists in radiographic procedures to meet VA requirements. Develops formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs. Recommends, coordinates and evaluates new or modified procedures/protocols. Can instruct or supervise the training of other technologists on specialized tasks and new/modified procedures and policies. Participates in the education of radiologic technologists as well as other technologists through departmental in-services. Evaluation of new employees.
Equipment Maintenance/Repair: Coordinates the repair and installation of Imaging equipment. Serves as the liaison between Radiology and Biomedical Engineering and repair contractors. Tracks and maintains records of repair histories and vendor performance. Monitors work performance by contractors and in-house Services assuring satisfactory completeness. Recommends equipment improvements, repairs, upgrades, etc. Participates in developing specifications for new equipment requests. Participates in developing service contract specifications.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
1. Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.
2. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
3. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments above the full performance level.
A Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist will have a current, full, active and unrestricted registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R).
4. English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d)
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above, candidates must meet the following grade requirements.
GS-10 Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist:
1. Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, at the GS-9 level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies.
2. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
*Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation.
Ability to evaluate quality management procedures and processes.
*Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity.
*Skill in developing new policies and guidelines as needed.
Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution.
