Duties

The incumbent will: Provide scientific and executive leadership to a program that prevents and controls parasitic diseases and malaria; provides cross-cutting epidemiologic and entomologic expertise and support; provides essential laboratory support to states, countries, and other partners; and conducts vital research and program evaluation. Direct and manage the day-to-day operations of the program including policy formulation and interpretation, determination of goals and objectives, evaluation and the interpretation of performance indicators, trends, needs, and impact of activities. Provide leadership and direction in development of long-range objectives and in the development and evaluation of DPDM's comprehensive medical and scientific policies and programs in responding to infectious parasitic diseases, including emerging and reemerging diseases. Provide leadership and expertise in the development and execution of research projects and measures the outcome of research activities through studies that evaluate the effectiveness of program initiatives in meeting the needs of the agency. Provide advice to the Director, NCEZID, Director, CDC, and other senior CDC management officials on problems that require in-depth knowledge and experience in the scientific, epidemiological, and public health aspects of parasitic disease. Support innovation and remain up to date on relevant technological advances, ensuring the scientific soundness and technical feasibility of new or improved technologies for the definition, diagnosis, prevention, research, and control of infectious parasitic diseases. Collaborate with and communicate internally and externally to local, state, federal and international organizations, academic institutions, as well as the private sector. Establish systems and strategies for research translation and dissemination of information to influence public policy and public health practice. Represent DPDM, NCEZID, and CDC at meetings, presentations, and hearings, including with HHS, other government agencies, OMB, and Congress. Exercise leadership to ensure that all programs under their direction reflect the principles of work force diversity in their management and operation in such areas as recruitment and staffing, employee development, staff assignments, and communications. Qualifications

Current federal employees must be at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level to be considered for this position. Current USPHS Commissioned Corps Officers must be at or above the O-6 grade level to be considered for this position. Basic Qualifications for RF-0602: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (external link); Association of American Medical Colleges (external link); Liaison Committee on Medical Education (external link); Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below. An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)(external link). A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association(external link), (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)(external link). A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training. Additional Requirements: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, applicants must also meet the following: Five years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or one year of specialized experience which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, such as senior public health leadership as it relates to epidemiologic research, public health surveillance, and laboratory science, including program design, execution, and evaluation. Typically, experience of this nature is gained at or above the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit transcripts or a list of applicable courses with their application package.
