This position is located in the Carpentry Shop, Maintenance and Repair Section, Facilities Management Service under the supervision of the Maintenance and Repair Foreman at the Wilmington VA Medical Center, Wilmington, DE.
Duties
Major Duties: Driving is required Modify and rework locking devices to accomplish special security objectives. Constructs, alters, maintains, and repairs buildings, structures, partitions, panels, shelving, work benches, furniture, acoustical ceiling systems, metal-framed walls, ceilings, and soffits, gypsum wallboard, handrails, wall protection, and corner guards. Hangs items on walls using anchors, installs blocking and bracing as required. Assembles equipment following manufacturer's instructions. Repairs, overhauls, modifies, tests, and installs locking devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes, vaults, and other secured locations. Manufacture and duplicate keys and the keying and combining of locking mechanisms. Manufactures, repairs, modifies, rebuilds, and assembles various types of metal and alloy parts, systems, and structures via welding processes. Skilled in the use of all woodworking and equipment and related machinery, and is capable of laying out, measuring, cutting, and selecting and installing materials per requirements, whether they be field measurements, work orders, or sketches. Performs a full range of carpentry tasks such as applying plastic laminates to wood, cutting grooves, and compound miter joints

Physical Requirements: In performing daily tasks, physical effort and stamina is required in walking, stooping, kneeling, working with hands over head or in close quarters and in strained positions, lifting and using different muscles in different positions. The incumbent works from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic work platforms. Requires good vision (with or without glasses), and should have good hearing (aid permitted). They frequently handles, lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Work is performed indoors and outdoors in various weather and temperature conditions. May be subjected to excessive dampness or chill, close quarters, uneven walking surfaces, working on ladders or scaffolding. Must work alone or in cooperation and coordination with others. Many work sites are hot, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant orders. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to work in the vicinity of asbestos containing materials. The incumbent will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner.
