Duties

As a Biologist, you will: Perform non research biological science work or biological science support work in various scientific and public health areas associated with numerous biological agents. Perform recurring, well-precedented standard techniques to identify and characterize biological and/or other agents that cause a number of diseases. Calibrate and operate laboratory instruments that are necessary to perform specialized tests, analyses and other standard procedures in conducting experiments and studies. Perform experiments in accordance with standard methods and techniques.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: Degree: Biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-09 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level, which must include the following experience: identifying biological agents which have relevance for public health; and performing experiments with standard methods and techniques (e.g., cell culture). OR Education: Have completed 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree that is directly related to the duties of the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Have a combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.

A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page.
