This position being established and organizationally aligned under Engineering Services - at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, Hines IL. (578). The position functions to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and productivity of-the Maintenance and Operations Section and to perform numerous tasks which are dlssimilar in kind, but which have in common the purpose of completing the work of one or more trade persons in the section, as part of Engineering Service maintenance & repair procedures.

Duties

Major Duties: Prepares and paints interior and exterior of buildings to include ceilings, floors, exterior trim, walls, parking areas, gutters, and downspouts Preparing surfaces by methods such as smoothing and pumice and rottenstone, filling, shaping, and leveling with metal and synthetic resins, and mixing and applying pre-coasting agents. Applying coating materials with trade devices such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, and graining devices.-Installs and modifies systems and equipment such as the routing, openings, slat, and level of gas and water lines and the arrangement of water closets, sinks, and fire sprinkler equipment. Works with building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and layout the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of utility systems and equipment. Uses wood, metal, and various composite materials when installing or replacing interior partitions, flooring, panels, suspended ceilings, counter tops, and moldings.-Interprets drawings, blueprints, and specifications. Measures for layouts such as footings for structural foundations and concrete forms. Locates and taps main lines, setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, placing hangers for proper level and slope, and determines and installs valves, traps, and unions. Works with all types of piping such as copper, plastic, cast iron, steel, and chrome plated brass. Assembles items with a variety of joining techniques such as miters, rabbets, dados, biscuit, and mortise and tenon, and use glues and adhesives to secure wood pieces, veneers, and countertops. Applies materials so that surfaces meet match, texture, decorative, thickness, and level requirements. Applies coating materials using techniques to smooth out brush and roller marks and preventing drips, runs, and skips. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/15/2023. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Your resume must show evidence that you possess the ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. This includes, but is not limited to: knowledge of shop mathematics to plan, compute, and layout projects; ability to interpret and apply building plans and blueprints; skill in the use of tools and equipment common to the trades of Carpentry, Plumbing, and Painting; knowledge of wood and wood substitute materials and construction techniques; knowledge of and ability to plan and lay out the installation and modification of various plumbing systems; and skill in the preparation of surfaces and the application of coating materials. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires a considerable amount of walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. The incumbent may work from ladders and scaffolding. When operating equipment, the worker may be under a great deal of strain from constant reaching, bending, turning, and moving of hands, arms, feet, legs, and by the vibration and jerking of the equipment. The incumbent carries, lifts, and handles parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and may occasionally exceed 40 pounds. Working Conditions: The work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather. The work area may be dirty, wet, dusty, and greasy, with inadequate lighting, heat, or ventilation. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation or harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and the hazards of operating power tools and equipment. Discomfort is encountered when wearing protective clothing, gloves, or eye goggles.
