Employee will serve as a Health Science Specialist within the Airborne Hazards and Burn Pits Center of Excellence (AHBPCE), located at the Veterans Healthcare Administration in VA New Jersey Health Care System, East Orange, NJ.
Duties
Position involves using tools such as R (Statistical Computing), SAS (Analytics Software), SQL (Structured Query Language), SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), STATA (Statistical Software for Data Science), and Excel to efficiently perform the duties of this position, to include but not limited to the following:
Database Development and Management:
Oversees and coordinates data activities for the research investigators and leadership.
Creates and uses large datasets to provide clear, unbiased written reports used for research evaluations, translational research, operational and clinical improvements, and to establish policy.
Applies analytic methods to create and manage project databases that most efficiently display the findings of the analyses, including graphics.
Sets and maintains data management systems, data collection, prepare data files for analysis, data cleaning, and develop criteria for the administration of health services research databases.
Data Extraction and Analysis:
Extracts, mines, cleans, analyzes and interprets data for management, clinicians, and research investigators to use for national health care quality improvements studies and health research investigations that examine process of care and risk adjusted health outcomes.
Studies new statistical methodology, explores new technology, and participates in seminars and professional conferences.
Program Support:
Manages the overall data needs for existing, new and upcoming research projects; evaluates program needs, sets timetables and specifications, managing the work to completion.
Participates in writing funding proposals, manuscripts for publication, and varying internal/external reports.
Devises and recommends process improvements including new technology, methods and instrumentation.
Develops and oversees intranet/internet websites.
Maintains efficient communications with research teams and stakeholders involved in the clinical research projects.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Requires a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.-AND-
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires one year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-11) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: leading, coordinating, and managing database development and management, data extraction and analysis, and program support activities for health services clinical research projects; and applying statistical techniques, mathematical modeling and use of statistical packages/software such as SPSS, SAS, STATA, etc. For detailed position criteria, see the duties section of the announcement.
