Duties

The mission of Podiatry Services of the Veterans Health Administration is to serve the needs of America's veterans by providing the highest quality foot and ankle care. Fully integrated into the interdisciplinary health care team, providing the full scope of Podiatric services based on education, training, licensure and competency, Emphasize prevention and wellness through all modalities including telehealth, Provide care in the most cost-effective manner while assuring adequate access and maintain a high level of quality as measured by patient satisfaction. The Staff Podiatrist for the Durham VA Health Care System performs direct medical care in podiatry. The incumbent must have authoritative knowledge in podiatry, preferably as evidenced by Board Certification or by Board Qualification by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery or by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine. The Podiatrist specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of foot and ankle conditions, and includes the following duties and responsibilities: Telehealth certification and ability to provide podiatric services via Clinical Video Teleconferencing {CVT), Store and Forward Technology (SFT), VA Video Connect {VVC), and the Remote Temperature Monitoring {RTM) programs. Develops clinical programs for podiatry in new DVAHCS locations to extend the geographic reach and access for veterans in conjunction with the Chief of Podiatry. Trains nursing and telehealth staff to provide pediatric services under the supervision of the podiatrist via CVT and SFT technology. Completion of history and physical examination with an emphasis on diagnosis and foot/ankle pathology, and identification of related systemic conditions. Management of podiatric pathology clinically - conservatively using orthotics and prosthetics, medically and surgically.. Prescription of pharmaceuticals and therapeutic devices, (orthotics, prosthetic devices, plaster casts, immobilization devices, etc.) Appropriate consultation, referral and co-management of patients with complicating systemic conditions. Provides professional advice to medical staff upon request with regard to professional management of patients being treated. Health promotion and disease prevention. Outpatient and Inpatient Podiatry medical and surgical services. Ongoing prevention, in-service, and patient education programs. Direction, teaching, and training of residents and students enrolled in training programs in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Screens podiatry consults for telehealth and explains telehealth to any interested veterans. Provides face-to-face podiatry care for patients in both the Durham Medical Center and in the Community Based Outpatient Clinics. Demonstrates the ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers, patients support service staff, nursing staff, physicians and other DVAHCS staff. Incumbent will display a cooperative attitude and will effectively work together to implement the organization's missions and goals. Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to patient privacy and HIPAA regulations. Responsible for all administrative activities normally associated with patient care such as consult review and completion, completion of patient medical records, encounters, and other documents necessary in the operation of an inpatient/outpatient treatment clinic. Maintains required continued Medical Education through conferences, reading programs or other approved CME events. Completes all mandatory education in TMS and training and competency validation. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Podiatrist Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree as a doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted. ~AND~ Completed, or currently completing, residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA Podiatrists involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or (2) Other residencies and training experiences, or their equivalents, which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. ~AND~ Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice Podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: Surgical training and experience with a diverse surgical log, including reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery. Experience in inpatient management and in busy outpatient clinics at a major medical center. Prior VA experience is a plus. References: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-4 Podiatrist Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (3 hours per day); standing (6 hours per day); kneeling (2 hours per day); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted).

Education

Applicants must possess a doctor of podiatric medicine degree, or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in podiatric medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 for a podiatric graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
