The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Asheville VA Medical Center, Facilities Management Service, Asheville, NC. The primary duties of the position are servicing, installing, modifying, reworking, and maintaining locking devices and control of keys for the Medical Center and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to:
Repair, overhauls, modifies, tests, programs, maintains, and installs a variety of locking devices found on doors, office furniture, compartments, mobile equipment, vaults, safes and other secured locations.
Manufacture and duplication of keys, and the keying and combination of locking mechanisms; both mechanical and electronic operation.
Install and adjusts a variety of commercially manufactured locking devices including combination locks which are typically installed in such security units as safes, vaults, cabinets and chests.
Set up coding systems involving varying types of locks and keyways and uses software systems management, technical manuals to ensure various keyways are compatible.
Use arithmetic to set up coding system and select the coding system and select the correct size of pins, and maintains facility key plans.
Make independent judgements in determining the work sequence, selection and use of trade tools and the techniques applied.
Design and invents using carpentry machines to do work for which they may not have been specifically designed.
Interpret technical manuals and specifications when testing and repairing locking mechanisms, and manipulates combination locks and picks key locks.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work at this level seldom requires lifting or carrying of items weighing in excess of 50 pounds. The locksmith workers frequently stand, stoop, bend, kneel and work in awkward positions when installing and opening locks and emergency exit hardware on-site.
