The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN6), Hampton VA Medical Center, Engineering Services, Maintenance and Repair Section, Hampton, Virginia. The primary, purpose of the position is to construct, alter, maintain and repair building, structures, partitions, panels, tool cabinets, bookcases, work benches and other items using wood, wood substitutes and composite building materials.

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Design, layout and construction of walls using wood or metal studs. Identifies fire and smoke partitions and makes necessary repairs per established code requirements. Cutting and installing drywall to include taping and mudding. Choosing proper material to match existing wall finish then installing the wall finishing including ceramic tile, wall paneling, laminate and vinyl. Preparing and installing insulation and wall moisture barriers. Constructing and repairing walls such as fire walls, smoke walls, masonry walls, load bearing walls, room dividers and partitions. Shoring up walls due to extensive damage. Preparing and installing wall supports for heavy items to be hung on the wall, then installing such items as television mounts, monitors, plaques, signs, etc. Performs layout of floors including the construction and installation of, joints, and joist support, timbers, subfloors, underlayment and finished floors such as hardwood, resilient tile, ceramic tile, carpet, linoleum etc. per drawing or blueprints. Installs doors and frames including wood and metal, complete with all types of door hardware assemblies. Installs window units. Repairs and installs window hardware such as sash cords, locks, etc. Constructs and makes repairs to roofs, roof decks and performs internal and external building trim work. Minor masonry work including mixing, pouring and finishing mortar, plaster, pro rock, level lastic and epoxy-based concrete including the construction of forms for placing concrete. Performs other directly related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. -3:30 p.m. Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter --Critical Skills Incentive Authorized--/PD0024A0 Critical Skills Incentive: Authorized (10% of base salary) "This occupation is currently approved for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive (CSI). Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI. The amount of lump sum CSI is determined based on appointment date and may be pro-rated as determined by the end date of the CSI. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI." Physical Requirements: Heavy physical efforts are required. Must be able to lift heavy objects, walk, bend, stoop, climb, crawl and stand on feet for extended periods of time. Must be able to work in tight and restrictive spaces such as under buildings, under equipment, in attics, in tunnels, etc., and at high elevations such as on roofs, scaffolds, ladders, in towers, etc., in excess of 30 feet. Incumbent works in tiring positions for prolonged periods. Position work requires frequent standing, bending, stooping, crouching, and arm movement. Position sometimes do position work in cramped areas, on temporary platforms, and overhead and frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 20 kilograms (45 pounds). Position may occasionally lift heavier items with assistance.
