You will serve as a Supervisory Nuclear Engineer in the Chief Test Engineering Branch (Code 2340.7), Nuclear Engineering Division (Code 2340), Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department (Code 2300) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Duties
You will provide nuclear engineering and planning services for ship construction, maintenance, repair, conversion and manufacturing products.
You will be provide management control of nuclear engineering work involved with testing, installation, monitoring, operation, and maintenance of naval vessel propulsion plant systems.
You will be responsible for oversight of all technical aspects of the Naval Shipyard Nuclear Power Program within assigned AOR such as Technical Work Document certification, on site engineering services, and overall management of programs.
You will advise and provide guidance to the Nuclear Chief Test Engineer and Nuclear Assistant Chief Test Engineer, on major policy and technical issues as they relate to Nuclear Propulsion Systems on Naval Vessels.
You will supervise subordinate engineers and technicians to support project planning and execution schedules.
You will plan, coordinate, and monitor the work of lower grade engineers, technicians, and craft workers, evaluating the progress and results obtained, and recommend major changes to achieve overall objectives.

- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.

- This position requires that the selectee be willing and able to climb ladders and scaffolding.
Qualifications
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience providing technical supervision and coordination of all activities integral to nuclear reactor plant testing and nuclear engineering. Experience applying advanced theories, concepts, principles and practices of nuclear engineering associated with diverse aspects of nuclear propulsion plants.
Experience effectively communicating both orally and in writing in order to inform, advise, guide or persuade various personnel.
Experience reviewing work submitted by subordinates for accuracy and completion.
Experience analyzing tests to determine necessary changes for nuclear reactor plant systems or operational procedures.
Experience planning work sequences, daily schedules, or tests to execute assigned duties.

Education
Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:
Successful completion of a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A (above). Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily, there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.
