About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.

Duties

Create, review, and edit metadata for digital collections in accordance with professional metadata and cataloging standards and schema. Manage the systems and processes that convert metadata and digital content for discovery, display, and use. Participate in the processes to develop, evaluate, and implement policies regarding metadata use and maintenance. Maintain quality control oversight of digital library content and metadata systems. Provide training to other library staff regarding digital library and metadata workflows. Create original cataloging using OCLC Connexion and III Millennium. Conduct batch loading of records to the integrated system, including pre-processing using MarcEdit and post-processing and review within the integrated system. May provide scheduled reference service, including night and weekend hours.

  • This is an obligated position. An obligated position is one to which an employee has statutory restoration rights or entitlement based on active military service, recovery from a compensable injury, or return rights based on an overseas tour.
  • You will be asked to sign an agreement acknowledging that you are aware of the obligation and willing to be displaced under reduction in force procedures upon the return of the former incumbent.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position may require the incumbent to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, or holidays.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Librarian: The Librarian occupation has specific education requirements which apply to all positions. To qualify, applicants must meet one of the basic requirements listed below. A. Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree. -OR- B. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) providing digital library services to end users; 2) developing and/or implementing strategies, practices, standards, or technologies to support access, management, and/or preservation of a library's digital collections; 3) assisting in coordinating workflow for digitizing and/or cataloging digital collections; and 4) assigning metadata to digital materials. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). -OR- Education: 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education in library science or doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) related to the position. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
