About the Position: This position is located at the Directorate of Public Works, Operations and Maintenance Division, Natick, MA.

Duties

Repair locking mechanisms by assessing the internal structure of the lock. Make changes to key locks by utilizing methods such as re-keying. Manufacture keys for use in locks. Modify locking devices by resetting locking codes. Maintain locking devices and/or mechanisms in operable conditions and according to security requirements. Troubleshoot industrial equipment to ensure proper use. Assist personnel who have been locked out of buildings to gain entry by using techniques such as lock picking.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the employee to occasionally travel away from the normal duty station.

  • This position requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license is required for the position.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Locksmith~ without more than normal supervision. Identifying key blanks and determining by inspection which are blanks are interchangeable. Troubleshooting locks and accomplishing minor fabrication of the parts when unable to obtain from other sources. Installing locks in doors. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Trouble ShootingUse of Measuring Instruments Physical Effort: Continually walking and standing and frequently climbs ladders and scaffolds. The employee must stand on hard surfaces for extended periods and stoop, bend, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. Occasionally lifts items that weigh over 40 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Working Conditions: Works outside in all kinds of weather. Subject to danger of falling when working on roofs and from scaffolds and ladders. Exposed to possibility of burns from hot asphalt, as well as cuts and bruises. Working with asphalt results in exposure to unusually dirty conditions that are damaging to clothing and shoes.. Is subject to cuts, burns chemical irritations, strains, electrical shock, and abrasions while repairing and handling equipment. May be exposed to unpleasant conditions from dirt, solvents, fuel, fumes, oil and grease. Employee must follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as ear plugs, face shields, gloves, hard hats, glasses, and safety shoes.
