These positions are located in the Pacific Northwest Region, Region 6 and will be located at a designated Forest Service Office. The position provides professional, scientific assistance to the staff pertaining to a variety of botanical and sensitive plant species duties in support of Forest activities. Duties

Duties listed below are at the full performance level. Conduct surveys for rare botanical species (vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens, and fungi) and invasive plants for ground- and habitat-disturbing activities, including vegetation/timber management projects. Coordinate native plant restoration (e.g., seed collection, processing, and increase; plant propagation; seed sowing and seedling out-planting). Work with various external partners (e.g., Oregon Department of Agriculture, Portland General Electric, Clackamas Soil and Water Conservation District, Oregon Department of Transportation) to coordinate invasive plant surveys and treatments. Serve on interdisciplinary teams for project planning, implementation, and monitoring.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards. Provide course descriptions as necessary. Basic Requirement: Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in: botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany. OR Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. For positions dealing with the study of fungi, or with basic mycological relationships, the course work in botany must have included at least 6 semester hours in mycology. Courses in basic botany, plant anatomy or morphology, cytology, histology, genetics, taxonomy or systematics, algology, mycology, ethnobotany, and those dealing with specific problems of a botanical nature or with specific groups of plants are qualifying. The courses required for mycologists are specific and must have been in mycology. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-07: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal Service. Qualifying specialized experience includes meeting one or more of the following: Participated in the treatment of invasive plant using a variety of methods; Participated in native plant community restoration projects; Studied and prepared sections of reports on invasive, threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species and plant community and vegetation management; Prepared samples and performed data analysis; Collected and summarized plant data; Participated in the treatment of invasive plants using a variety of methods; OR One (1) year of graduate education; OR An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education; OR Superior Academic Achievement (to determine if you are eligible, go to: http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/policy/ApplicationOfStds-04.asp. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. For the GS-09: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. Qualifying specialized experience includes meeting one or more of the following: Participated in or assisted with the planning and implementation of invasive plant treatments using a variety of methods; Participated in or assisted with the planning and implementation of native plant community restoration projects; Participated in the evaluation and monitoring of the invasive plant and threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species and plant community and vegetation management programs; Located, surveyed, identified, and recorded threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species information in order to meet environmental assessment requirements; Collected and summarized data and administered plant species projects; Participated in or assisted with the planning and implementation of invasive plant treatments using a variety of methods; OR A master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related; OR An appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
