The Nephrology service functions under the overall management of the Section Chief of Nephrology and under the supervision of the site Dialysis Unit Nephrologists/medical directors. He/she is responsible and accountable for ensuring the provision of comprehensive medical services and complies with established policies within the Department of Medicine, Nephrology Medicine section.
Duties
In addition to compliance with national and local regulatory, policy, and accreditation requirements governing this health care system, this position encompasses the following responsibilities, in partnership with his/her Administrative Officer and the support of the section chiefs, and supervisors. The incumbent requires appropriate time mapping and resources to ensure they are empowered to meet expected proficiencies in administration, clinical practice, education, and research.

Administrative:
Demonstrates commitment to high quality customer service, including specific measures identified as performance goals by the Medical Center.
Participates in and attends medical center committees and in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams.
Annually develops and evaluates professional and personal goals. Identifies individual professional learning needs and participates in formal programs, workshops, seminars, conferences, as well as self-directed learning activities, completes facility wide mandatory education yearly
Clinical:
Provides quality patient-centered patient care to both inpatients and outpatients for adults age 18-65 and older adults age 65+ as assigned by Chief, Nephrology Section.
Consistently demonstrates expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill, multi-symptomatic patients when clinical assignments so dictate.
Completes all medical record documentation in CPRS in a timely manner, including view alerts and encounter completion.
Demonstrates skill in implementation of clinical practice guidelines and protocols for patients with complex medical care needs.
Documents administrative and clinical information in a thorough and accurate manner.
Develops the initial plan of care and updates the plan, serving as a resource person to less experienced staff, and acts as a leader in developing standards of care.
Assesses veterans and identifies acute/non-acute/chronic health problems by utilizing advanced clinical judgment and physical assessment skills.
Expected to participate in pre-kidney transplant evaluations and care of chronic post kidney transplant patients.
Expected to be proficient in inpatient and outpatient dialysis delivery.
Clinical responsibilities include outpatient dialysis care and outpatient nephrology clinics( if needed) in Kernersville North Carolina Health Care Center as well as Outpatient Nephrology clinics responsibilities in Salisbury NC if needed.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Physician Assistant Basic Requirements
Master's degree in any discipline or a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant ~AND~
Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) (or are you in the process to taking the exam) ~AND~
Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia.
The full performance level of this vacancy is 3. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of 1 to 3.
Preferred Experience: Experience with outpatient dialysis and kidney care (Nephrology)
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
Physical Requirements: Bending, pushing, pulling, reaching and occasional kneeling, crawling and squatting; lifting, carrying, bending, and manipulation of equipment; patient assistance and positioning; walking and prolonged standing; the ability to read written orders, computer screens, patient records, and equipment controls; and the ability to communicate with patients, physicians, and coworkers. Near visual acuity to assess patient's physician condition when performing exams and evaluating images for diagnostic quality. Must be able to speak and hear to communicate with patients; ability to make critical decisions, interact with patients of different ages and health conditions, maintain patient confidentiality, work under stressful conditions, such as operating or emergency rooms.
