This position is for a Supervisory Anesthesiology Technician (Anesthesia) located at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center.

Duties

Individuals in this assignment assume full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the work of subordinate technicians. Typically, these duties include assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff; providing anesthesia technician services in more complex cases; reviewing and making recommendations regarding new and emerging procedures; providing instruction and training to new staff; interviewing candidates for positions; recommending selections, advancements, promotions; evaluating performance; taking disciplinary action when necessary; and identifying educational or training needs. The Supervisory Anesthesia Technician (SAT) has considerable latitude and independent judgement. The Supervisor plans, directs and or reviews the staff assigned to the daily checks to include the process of monitoring equipment and anesthetic machines in the operating suite and out of Operating Room (OR) procedure sites. The Supervisor plans, directs and or review the staff assigned to include sets-up and balances the pressure transducers for all hemodynamic monitoring activities performed in the operating suite. The Supervisor plans, directs and or reviews the staff assigned to perform clinical laboratory tests for the unit (i.e., blood gas, activated clotting time and glucose) or perform more difficult equipment repairs. The Supervisor plans, directs and or reviews the staff assigned to the technician may also participate in large-vessel cannulations (with subsequent monitoring) characteristic of open-heart, transplant and major vascular surgeries. The Supervisor plans, directs and or reviews the staff assigned to evaluates the suitability of all retrieved specimens for analysis, requests a new specimen if the provided is unusable, processes specimens using equipment or techniques necessary to prepare them for a specific analysis and respond in a timely manner to ensure the state of the specimen is maintained. The Supervisor plans, directs and or reviews the staff assigned to prepares quality control specimens, conducts quality control procedures on equipment and reagents and maintain proper records for quality control reports. Provides the technical supervision for the Anesthesia Service for all inspections including CAP and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization (JCAHO). The Supervisor plans, directs and or reviews the staff assigned to maintains all oxygen analyzer components on the portable anesthesia machines. The Supervisor plans, directs and or reviews the staff assigned to assist nurse anesthetists, house officers and anesthesiologists with the correct use and maintenance of physiologic monitoring equipment such as: the intra-arterial blood pressure monitoring transducers, blood analyzer machinery, Swan-Ganz monitoring equipment and all new innovative medical monitoring systems. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Education may be substituted for experience only at the GS-4 and GS-5 levels. See the grade requirements part of this standard for information regarding educational substitutions. Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above; desired certification: Anesthesia Technologist certification (Cer.A.T.T.) or Anesthesia Technician certification (Cer.A.T.) through the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: To qualify at the GS-10 grade level, you must have at least 1 year of specialized experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-09), which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. Required specialized experience includes, but is not limited to: Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques. Ability to manage and supervise employees in two or more functional specialties. Knowledge of Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and other regulatory requirements. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. Certification. At this level, it is highly desirable that supervisors possess certification in one or more appropriate functional areas. Preferred Experience: None References: VA Handbook 5005/15, Part II, Appendix G27 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-8. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-10.
