About the Position: This position is located within the Department of Pathology, Anatomical Pathology at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, MD.

Duties
Responsible for the identification, accessioning, proper fixation and processing of all tissue specimens received by the laboratory.
Processes and prepares special pathologic tissue for study by pathologist.
Examines specimens and determines methods of preparation and staining to best demonstrate characteristics to be studied.
Develops and executes new procedures related to micro techniques and assists in the establishment of new and competent methods of fixation of pathologic and normal tissue for micro analytic examination.
Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and adjusts or repairs cryostats, which are used to prepare frozen section for the rapid diagnosis of cancer.
Performs cryotome and must maintain a skill level sufficient to cut frozen section slides if the pathologist or resident needs assistance.
Work requires thorough knowledge and experience in tissue orientation and embedding in paraffin wax and proper microtomy techniques of all tissue types, including bone.
Performs a full range of duties involved in special processing and staining of all tissue types including skin, bone, nerve, brain, and lymph nodes.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position may require the incumbent to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, or on an "on call" basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
- This position has been designated “Mission Essential”. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes embedding, cutting and staining paraffin embedded tissue; operating tissue processors and automated stainers; and conducting quality control procedures on histopathology equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Histopathology.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.
