The Registered Nurse Professional Development Practitioner (NPDP) is an EXPERT nurse and a skilled professional who influences professional role competence and growth of learners in a variety of settings with a desired outcome of improved population health. The NPDP III provides expertise as an educator, facilitator, mentor, change agent, leader, champion of inquiry, partner for practice transitions and advocate for the NPD specialty.

Duties

VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package: VA Nurse Total Rewards The Registered Nurse Professional Development Practitioner (NPDP) assesses, designs, implements and evaluates educational programs to facilitate learning and augment the continuum of quality patient care delivery. The registered nurse possesses the knowledge and skills to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process with a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting which will then enable effective implementation of health promotion and prevention practices, management of acute and chronic illnesses and the attainment of optimal levels of functioning and/or support of the dying Veteran and family/significant others. The NPDP collaborates with multiple disciplines in provision of an effective education program including orientation, continuing education, competency development and assessment, in-services, and interdisciplinary learning. The NPDP incorporates existing and new practice, quality, safety and regulatory standards into education that aligns with the organization/unit culture to improve knowledge and skills necessary for patient care and/or organization development. The NPDP must be able to create measurable learning objectives/outcomes and evaluate success of individual and team learning activities. The NPDP must exhibit skills of attention to detail, records management and ability to interpret VHA directives and policies. The NPDP must demonstrate strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, be poised and articulate, exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills, with people of varied educational levels and backgrounds. The NPDP will actively maintain the standards and best practices required by the Kansas State Board of Nursing (KSBN), ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, the Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development. The NPDP must demonstrate customer service and Servant Leadership principles in all aspects of work and with all internal/external customers. This position requires flexibility in schedule and assignments as this is a 24/7 hospital and education and training are provided during off tour hours. Must be willing to work cooperatively as a member of a two-campus team in all assignments and be autonomous in the pursuit of meeting professional standards and growth in the Education Department. The NPDP is directly responsible to the Associate Chief of Nursing Service for Education, and works in collaboration with the other NPDPs, Educators, Associate Chiefs of Nursing Service, Clinical Coordinators, Nurse Managers, Supervisors, and Staff. Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Role responsibilities and accountabilities also include demonstration of teaching knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of patients served in the assigned area of practice. This knowledge includes understanding changes associated with aging and specific needs of the population served. Education will be delivered primarily within the departments. Experience in Primary Care or Behavioral Health is desired. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Note: Regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Education and/or Experience - Experience in Primary Care or Behavioral Health; BSN or Masters in Nursing SNor related field preferred. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Eligible applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to themselves or others.
