This position is with the Wrangell Ranger District in Wrangell, Alaska. This position responsible for operating and maintaining the unit's recreation program. For additional information about the duties of this position, please contact Tori Houser at [email protected].

Duties

The duties described are at the target grade, GS-09. Develops and implements recreation plan objectives and inspects the full range of recreation uses. Participates with other resource personnel in developing long-range plans for managing recreation resources within developed and dispersed recreation sites on the unit. Prepares detailed project work plans and schedules, including required personnel, equipment, and supplies. Inspects recreation areas and areas of concentrated public use for compliance with permit and management plans, public health regulations, and safety plans. Conducts surveys and studies of existing dispersed and developed recreation facilities and their present use and demand. Participates with Recreation Program Manager in the review, appraisal, and current analysis of the District recreation and lands resources. Performs field inspections to ensure ground activities are in compliance with approved plan of operations. Performs safety hazard analyses of facilities, recreation sites, and trails within, and takes or recommends corrective action. Provides technical and administrative supervision to subordinate employees. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-07: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) defined as one or more of the following: Planning and implementing the logistics required for completion of wilderness projects, such as trail maintenance and reconstruction projects, habitat restoration projects, and invasive plant surveys; Patrolling trails to ensure areas were operated, used, and maintained in accordance with trail management plans; Conducting trail maintenance surveys and documenting trail work needs in data management systems; OR Following trail maintenance schedules and conducting inventories. OR The successful completion of one full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position (such as forestry, range management, agriculture). OR A combination of experience and education described above that together meets the requirement for this position. For the GS-08: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-7)defined as one or more of the following: Assisting with formulating and implementing wilderness project work plans in accordance with agency policy; Participating in the identification and planning for future trail construction, reconstruction, maintenance, and restoration projects; Providing input to the budget planning by assisting with the overall estimation of materials, personnel, and supplies needed for work accomplishment for developed and dispersed recreation sites; OR Administering a recreation area with responsibility for developing and carrying out operations plans for the use, improvement, and maintenance for developed and dispersed recreation sites. OR The successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a recreation program of study or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., in a recreation management program of study. OR A combination of experience and education described above that together meets the requirement for this position. Only education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used as a combination to qualify at this grade level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
