This position is located in Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Unit for the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Athens, GA, Gainesville, FL, Raleigh, NC or Stoneville, MS. In this position, you will be responsible for serving as the focal point and lead in collaborating with Sugarcane scientists and among other research programs in the development of protocols, bioinformatics, and statistical solutions for analyzing and interpreting genomics, phenomics, metagenomics, and Big Data.

Duties

Provides bioinformatics, computational and statistical information on research plan proposals, experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation of results for ARS national programs research. Provides oversight in bioinformatics/statistical needs and developing solutions for research data/information needs. This involves technical guidance on statistical, mathematical and bioinformatics concepts. Conducts and oversees the development of bioinformatics solutions for analyzing and interpreting omics and Big Data related to breeding. Develops and/or implements statistical procedures in molecular genetics and bioinformatics, and initiates and oversees the extramural bioinformatics and/or statistical support agreements. Utilizes computer software for complex analyses and database management in support of the research information management. Develops new computational methodologies for sugarcane to enable investigation of breeding program data. Coordinates and participates in the planning of experiments, providing technical advice on research plans, experimental design, sampling procedures from the perspective of sugarcane breeding data management infrastructure.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Basic Education Requirement: A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below. GS-12: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience providing guidance on experimental design and analysis with sugarcane crops; and performing bioinformatics and statistical analysis for scientists. GS-13: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience leading team research; performing sugarcane crop bioinformatics/statistical analysis with scientists; and publishing manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals as primary author. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
