This is a Career-Seasonal position in the Division of Maintenance & Construction of Sequoia National Park, subject to release and recall procedures. Career Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately October through September, and you will be in a non-pay status for one pay period from approximately 09/29-10/12.

Duties

The Utilities Systems Repairer Operator is the operator in entry level stage of under the technical supervision of the lead Utility Systems Repairer-Operator (USRO) for the water systems and wastewater systems. Responsible for using the proper methods of operation, monitoring, and maintenance of water treatment facilities, storage and distribution systems which provide between 500 and 50,000 gallons per day for public and domestic use. Responsible for using the proper methods for the efficient operation, maintenance, repair, and monitoring of an Activated Sludge/Extended Aeration Treatment plant with state-of-the-art treatment processes under the direct supervision of the lead USRO. Under the direct supervision of the lead USRO, you will use proper methods for operations and daily operator maintenance techniques for various kinds of water and wastewater treatment equipment. Physical Demands: Work assignments typically require moderately heavy physical effort to lift, carry, or otherwise handle items typically weighing up to 40 pounds. Duties require the incumbent to maneuver into and out of specific locations while dismantling and assembling utility related equipment. The incumbent may make repairs from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping is typical. Occasionally, climbing and work in high places may be required, as well as the use of hoists, holders, and pulleys when handling large equipment. Working Conditions: Work is both indoors and outdoors where the incumbent may be subject to prevailing weather conditions. The incumbent may be exposed to biological hazards or diseases while cleaning equipment or shoveling sludge, and hazardous gases such as methane, chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon monoxide. The incumbent may also be subject to electrical shock, loud noises, acids, and hydraulic fluids while working around motors and pumps. There is exposure to shock, burns, and strains. The incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as face shields, gloves, hard-toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing that may be uncomfortable to wear. The incumbent is required to attend and participate in safety meetings and training and review and follow safety regulations and policies prior to using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as goggles, rubber mats, gloves, hard hats and respirators as the jobs require. The incumbent may be required to operate motor vehicles.

To qualify for this position, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties. You must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factor: Ability to do the work of a Utility Systems Repair Operator without more than normal supervision (Screen out). Experience that demonstrates prior work experience performing Utility Systems Repair Operator duties such as: assisting the operation and maintenance of a water & wastewater treatment facility, or a utility system related to water production and treatment. SELECTIVE FACTOR: Must possess (by the closing date of this announcement) a state of California Water Treatment Grade 1 license or equivalent, and a California Water Distribution Grade 1 license, or equivalent license from another state and can meet the reciprocity conditions (see this link for those conditions: California State Water Resources Control Board - Water Treatment & Distribution System Operators). You MUST include a copy of both T1 and D1 licenses with your application (or equivalents). Failure to do so will result in no further consideration.
