This vacancy is for a Geographer position in the Department of Commerce located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. The Census Bureau is accessible from the Metro Rail Green Line - Suitland Station.

Duties
Develops and uses geographic information systems (GIS) and statistical methods to process and analyze geospatial and demographic data, and map spatial data patterns.
Writes and runs programs or scripts in R or Python to process geospatial and demographic data and automate processes.
Manages projects relating to geospatial data analysis and programming.
Write reports, method documents, and articles related to geo-demographic studies.
Create technical presentations for meetings and conferences on geo-demographic topics.

Minimum Education Requirement:
Degree: geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.
or
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
Specialized Experience: For the GS-13, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal services.
Experience for this position includes: independently applying geographic information systems (GIS), programming in R or Python, and statistical methods to process and analyze geographic and demographic information; designing and implementing advanced techniques for geodemographic data analysis using R or Python; coordinating and leading projects relating to geodemographic data (project management); identifying and resolving complex problems involving geographic data analysis; presenting methods and results orally and in writing in meetings, conferences, method documents, and publications; and providing expert advice and guidance on geospatial techniques and R or Python programming.
There is no education substitute for experience at this grade level.
