About the Position: This position is with the Defense Health Agency at the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Cavazos, Texas.
This is a Direct Hire Solicitation
Duties
Set up equipment, establish a sterile field, assemble needed sterile supplies, and hand sterile items to the physician.
Perform dressing changes within clinic treatment areas, cleanse minor wounds and burns, remove sutures, assemble any splinting material necessary and apply, and terminate and prepare room for service.
Construct, apply, and assist in the application of a variety of splints and casts using all forms of casting to include plaster, thermoplastic, and hydroplastic casting material.
Function as scrub or circulating nurse during surgical procedures, monitor patient's status during procedure, apply necessary monitoring devices and other orthopedic instrumentation, and assist in the preparation and subsequent surgical procedures.
Receive telephone calls and requests for assistance or information, input and extract patient and treatment data from the automated health care system, ensure all records and reports are available to the provider, and schedule follow-up visits.
Ensure cast room, surgical suite and treatment rooms are adequately stocked with supplies to include office supplies, operating publications and linen.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- This position requires moderate to heavy lifting up to 45 pounds.
- Incumbent may be required to take primary call on a rotating basis.
- This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.

Basic Requirement for Orthopedic Technician:
Specialized experience: Possession of at least one full year of experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or above) which includes applying casts (such as fiberglass and/or plaster) to various parts of the body and assisting with Orthopedic procedures or operations.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
