These positions are located in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service at the Caldwell VA Clinic in Caldwell, Idaho. The incumbents perform a variety of functions, including accession specimens into computer system; collects, evaluates, and processes patient specimens; answers questions relative to specimens; instructs and assists patients; and sends out specimens for testing. Follows policies and procedures established by service, medical center, VA, and regulatory agencies.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties and responsibilities include: Collecting and processing specimens obtained for analyses throughout P&LMS and associated reference laboratories. Performing venipuncture specimen collections from inpatient, outpatients, and ambulatory inpatients. Making judgements regarding sufficiency of sample, panel selection, and selection of testing medium. Making gross visual observations and identifying subtle changes regarding the patient's condition, notifying appropriate emergency personnel as needed. Preparing specimens for testing, such as labeling, centrifugation, decanting, aliquoting, etc., preparing reagents, performing the test procedure, verifying the accuracy of the results and reports results in the VISTA computer system. Operating centrifuges, reporting any malfunction to supervisor, as needed, and evaluating temperature requirements of refrigerators on the wards as needed. Receiving and sorting specimens collected from inpatients, outpatients, and all CBOC's, checking request slips for proper information, logging in specimen, and delivering specimens to various laboratory sections. Performing other duties as assigned. IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-5 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING: ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. ~AND~ SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must possess at least one year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Medical Technician position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. At this level, specialized experience should include experience performing a variety of relatively standardized tests, examinations, and determinations. The procedures and techniques are well-established but involve many meticulous sequential steps to complete a test; and following written procedures which give carefully detailed instructions on each step of the assigned test and examinations. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE.) ~OR~ SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: You must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. Education cannot be credited without documentation. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION.) ~OR~ COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience, as described above, to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-5 level. Physical Requirements: Physical demands will involve minimal lifting, long periods of standing, walking, bending, or sitting. The employee must have the digital dexterity and adequate vision to perform safe venipuncture procedures. Lifting will not exceed a weight of 30 pounds. The employee must fully utilize all safety practices and equipment provided by the medical center, and in compliance with local and accrediting agency requirements.
