About the Position: Serves as Project Engineer/Scientist in the Geotechnical Branch, Engineering Division. Assignments involve providing technical support on Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) issues.

Duties

Provide professional, scientific advice and guidance in connection with planning, site investigations, feasibility studies, design, and construction of a variety of hazardous waste projects. Design, implement, and guide baseline contamination investigations. Plan, direct and/or monitor environmental investigations to evaluate potential pollution and contamination sources and their control or abatement. Plan, scopes, coordinate, and oversee detailed hazardous waste site investigations, feasibility studies, remedial action design, and cleanup construction.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • One-year probationary period may be required.
  • Temporary travel (TDY) up to 10% of the time may be required.
  • A current, active, full, and unrestricted license as a Registered Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Geologist (PG) will be required at entry and must be maintained for continued employment.

Basic Education Requirement for Each Series: Engineer - All Engineers - GS-0810, GS-0819, GS-0893 Series Geologist - GS-1350 Series AND Specialized experience for the GS-12: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Conducts site investigations and design studies on HTRW sites AND 2) Prepare reports, plans, and specifications based upon results AND 3) Review laboratory test results and make recommendations based upon them. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Environmental PlanningProgram ManagementTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent. For the GS-12 you must have 52 weeks at the GS-11 level. With regards to time-in-grade validation, if you held a position other than a GS pay plan, be sure your resume includes the pay plan and the salary you earned during the assignment. Without this information, your time-in-grade validation may not be able to be verified and will result in your not meeting the time-grade requirement for this vacancy.
