This supervisory medical/surgical social worker position is for the Social Work Service for the VA Boston Healthcare System at the West Roxbury, MA campus. This is a full time position 40 hours per week.

Duties

The Medical/ Surgical (Med/Surg) Social Work Supervisor works under the supervision of the Social Work Supervisor to assist with administrative functions of the program as well as providing direct clinical case management and discharge planning services to veterans receiving care in the Acute Medical/Surgical units at Boston VA Healthcare System. The incumbent provides direct supervision to social work staff in the acute Med/Surg hospital. The incumbent coordinates efficient and appropriate delivery of services with the Supervisor, the multidisciplinary team, as well as specialty services providing care in the inpatient setting. The Incumbent also participates with collaboration across services and settings within the Medical Center and at the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) level, including within Acute Med/Surg, the Community Living Center, Mental Health, and other VA Medical Centers in the VISN. The incumbent participates in planning and program development; evaluation of Medical Surgical Social Work interventions and implementation of best practices, to ensure continual quality improvement and excellence in customer service. The work affects a wide range of agency activities and operations at multiple levels. It directly affects the health and well-being of the patients served and relationships with community organizations and stakeholders. The Medical Surgical Social Work Supervisor working under the supervision of the Social Work Supervisor assists in the provision of the clinical and administrative services for Medical Surgical social workers. The functions include coordinating the activities of the unit social workers. The Medical Surgical Social Work Supervisor works with the Social Work Supervisor to monitor all program functions related to performance measures and performance monitors within the acute medical setting, VA Boston and across the VISN as appropriate. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website to verify if that social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a master of social work. Licensure: Individuals assigned as Social Work Supervisor must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. English Language Proficiency: Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. Grade Determinations/Minimum Qualifications for GS-12 Supervisory Social Worker: Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Worker must have one year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level and demonstrate the GS 11 KSA's below: (a) Knowledge of community resources, how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services, and ability to coordinate services. (b) Skill in independently conducting psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational and other diversified backgrounds. (c) Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures (i.e. acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology) to formulate a treatment plan. (d) Skill in independently implementing different treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical, and social problems to achieve treatment goals. (e) Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers, social work graduate students, and other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) listed below for the GS-12 level. (a) Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines. (b) Knowledge of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision, consultation, negotiation with other departments and quality improvement. (c) Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services. (d) Ability to provide staff training and development. (e) Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers. Preferred Experience: Experience providing clinical supervision Experience with supervisory tasks including performance evaluation Experience with medical social work Experience with discharge planning Experience working as social worker in inpatient setting Experience working with leadership Experience with data collection and process improvement Experience with public speaking and Professionalism References: VA Handbook 5005/120, Part II, Appendix G39 - Social Worker Qualification Standard Physical Requirements: Must be in overall good health, able to sit at a desk working at a computer, engage in light to moderate physical activity including sitting, walking, bending, and carrying supplies. Applicants must be able to perform primarily light and sedentary duties with occasionally moderate physical demands, exercise patience, and control emotions, with reasonable accommodation if necessary, without endangering the health and safety of the applicant or others.
