This position is located in the Maintenance and Utilities Section of the Engineering Service at the VA Medical Center in Montgomery, AL.
Duties
Maintains, repairs, and operates the boiler plant and related equipment and systems;
Maintains, repairs, and operates domestic hot water (backup) natural gas boilers in the chiller plant;
Monitors, calibrates, and performs preventive maintenance and repairs equipment and systems;
Maintains and repairs auxiliary equipment to keeps boilers operating efficiently;
Operates boilers with a capacity of between 40,000 to 100,000 or more pounds of steam per hour;
Maintains efficient combustion levels and ensures compliance with air pollution laws or regulations;
Adjusts fuel feeds and the volume and velocity of draft and other fire box variables to achieve maximum combustion efficiency with changing load demands or variations in fuel quality;
Uses electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic controls, and zone charts in conjunction with meters, gauges, and computer-generated data to determine adjustments or corrections necessary for proper boiler operations or changing load requirements;
Adjusts fuel feeds and the volume and velocity of draft and other fire box variables to achieve maximum combustion efficiency with changing load demands or variations in fuel quality;
Operates and repairs hot water boilers;
Operates and monitors the METASYS energy management system;
Responds to alarms that include HVAC temperature controls, medication refrigeration temperature controls, and fire alarms;
Performs related duties as required.
Work Schedule: Rotating shifts, 8:00am - 4:00pm; 4:00pm - 12:00am; and 12:00am - 8:00am.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Frequently carries parts and sets up equipment that weighs up to 50 pounds. Hoist, jacks, and pulleys are operated to remove and replace large units. Most equipment is operated or repaired from floor level or using ladder(s), fixed scaffolding, and platforms. Requires good eyesight, use of all limbs, and the ability to walk, crawl, and climb. Work is sometimes performed in cramped positions where bending, stooping, and/or crawling may be required for short periods of time during repair work. Work is normally performed inside of Boiler Plant and/or Chiller Plant; however, on occasion, may be required to accomplish work in other Engineering shops. The Boiler Plant, Chiller Plant, and the emergency generator produce high temperatures and considerable noise. There is exposure to the hazards of shock, tripping, falling, burns, dust, fluids, and chemicals. Fumes may be generated from gas systems, oil systems, and chemicals. Steam header in the Boiler Plant normally has steam safety precautions to offset the above working conditions. Ear protectors, face masks, aprons, gloves, are provided and worn as required to meet safety requirements.
