The Medical Technician is an integral part of the team and is the initial contact for the laboratory customers. The Medical Technician provides clinical and administrative support to the laboratory and VA providers. The Medical Technician is able to perform duties to include, but is not limited to: venipuncture, specimen accessioning, clerical duties, answering phone calls and point of care testing.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Performs a range of diagnostic laboratory support duties such as venipuncture for collection of blood specimens and collection/acceptance of other body fluids such as urine or sputum.
Uses proper sterile techniques for collection of samples.
Adheres to special instructions regarding temperature, protection from light etc.
Performs proper patient identification and labeling of all samples per lab policy.
Adheres to safety, infection control, and standard precautions at all times while collecting samples. This includes wearing appropriate PPE, hand hygiene and proper disposal of all items used in the collection process.
Must be proficient in venipuncture, being able to draw even the most difficult patients and following proper guidance for redrawing blood. Responds to calls for assistance from nursing staff in the collection of samples on the most challenging patients. Samples are collected with minimal number of attempts, patient bruising or requiring redraws due to hemolysis/improper tubes.
Uses hospital computer system to identify all lab orders, follow special instructions and to review and accept all orders. When collecting timed specimens and special collections, can explain and inform patient on the procedures to be followed and the time frames involved.
Provides assistance to patients and customers to include answering questions on obtaining lab results, directions, making lab appointments.
Monitors supply inventory, rotates stock to minimize outdating of supplies.
Responsible to check and remove outdated supplies in the work area.
Requests additional supplies using established protocols.
Performs support duties such as collecting Q.I. data as requested for department goals.
Performs Point of Care testing as ordered, cleans equipment per policy and reports any issues.
Maintains knowledge of RME requirements and appropriate cleaners/disinfectants for each task.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/18/2023.You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
For the GS-4 level: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR
Educational requirements for the GS-4: Successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of the training course as described in (a) or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled.
Prior Phlebotomy experience preferred, but not required.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items such as papers, books, or driving an automobile, etc. No specific physical demands are required to perform the work.
