About the Position: This position is primarily located at Wilford Hall on Lackland, AFB, but in the future this position may include some duty days at Brooke Army Medical Center on Fort Sam Houston.

Duties
Conduct, plan, and coordinate all clinical and administrative aspects of a full range of services associated with contemporary speech/language pathology practices.
Has full professional responsibility for cases that are difficult and complex, both in terms of the severity of the communications impairment and the presence of complicating physical and emotional factors that impinge on the treatment process.
Formulate and conduct diagnostic evaluation and therapy for patients with severe communication, swallowing disorders, and other upper aero-digestive disabilities, in combination with other physical, mental and/or social handicaps.
Maintain collaboration with other health care practitioners; establish and maintain an effective therapy relationship with the patient, family and caregivers; and adjust treatment plan to patient response and indicators of progress.
Comply with hospital plans and policies to meet recognized accrediting agencies’ (such as the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) or Joint Commission) requirements.
Ensure temporal, quantity, and quality demands of the workload are met by meeting or exceeding Air Force business standards.
May participate in clinical research related to communication sciences, swallowing disorders, or other upper aero-digestive functions.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
- This position may require the incumbent to work on call during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.

Basic Requirements for Speech Language Pathologist:
Education: Successful completion of a graduate or higher-level degree that included 18 semester hours in the field of speech pathology with approved clinical practice. The education program must have been approved, recognized, or accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) at the time the degree was obtained.
License: This position requires a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice Speech Language Pathology in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing video fluoroscopic and modified barium swallow studies, administering and/or interpreting videostroboscopy examinations, and administering and/or interpreting flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
