The Laundry Worker position is assigned to the Laundry Section, VA Black Hills Health Care System, Fort Meade, SD. The incumbent is located in the linen distribution section of the Textile Care facility. He/she will also be required to assume duties of a laundry worker.

Duties

This occupation is currently approved for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive through 10/19/2024. Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI for a pro-rated amount if onboard prior to the CSI expiration date. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI. Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Prepares and loads carts of clean linen for delivery to wards, clinics, and other areas; and loads carts according to established linen quotas. Handles telephone requests for additional linen and maintains records of all such requests. Performs all duties in accordance with station policies, procedures, regulations, and standards applicable to the laundry section. Operates the flatwork spreader/feeder, ironer, folder, and stacker/conveyor; and operates industrial dryers, a small piece folder, and garment tunnel finisher. Unloads industrial washers and operates lift stations, index switches, and rail sling systems. Sorts soiled linen by classification and degree of soil and follows all established procedures. Performs routine care and maintenance of machines and equipment (i.e., tightening nuts and bolts and/or greasing/oiling fittings and wheels); and inspects linens for damage, stained items, etc. Follows established safety and infection control procedures; and keeps the assigned work area clean and free of debris. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00am to 2:30pm. Occasional weekends and Holidays Position Description Title/PD#: Laundry Worker/PD20220A Bargaining Unit Position: Yes, AFGE/1272 Physical Requirements: Employee must use proper body mechanics and coordination; must possess the strength and stamina for doing heavy physical tasks for long periods of time; and must be able to handle loaded carts weighing up to 700 pounds and lift loads over 50 pounds. Employee uses provided safety garments during the performance of all assigned duties. Working Conditions: Laundries are extremely noisy and usually hot and humid. Workers are exposed to noise, vibrations, and atmospheric conditions associated with a textile care setting. Requires continuous walking on concrete floors, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting. In the possibility of exposure to laundry from patients with contagious diseases, workers wear protective masks, gloves, and gowns.
