This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
This is a TERM position not to exceed 2 years, with provisions to extend up to eight years depending on the needs of management. This position cannot be made permanent.
This position is located at Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
Duties
Conduct medical examinations at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS).
Perform medical evaluations in accordance with required medical standards for suitability determination.
Obtain and review patients’ medical histories to ensure suitability of applicants for service in the Armed Forces.
Document applicant medical records in computer and non-computer-based systems in accordance with current policies.
Interpret patients’ medical documentation, special screenings and/or select laboratory findings to determine any abnormalities.
Perform post-processing inspections of previously qualified applicants to ensure continued compliance to medical fitness standards.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain required certification/licenses.
- Successful completion of training program for Physician Assistants recognized by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant and current certification by the NCCPA.
- Occasionally may be required to work on Saturdays; and/or shift work (work before 0600 or after1800 hours).
- May require up to twenty-five percent business travel or temporary duty (TDY) on an annual basis to other Military Entrance Processing Stations to cover staffing shortages.
- Credentials must be submitted to Headquarters, United States Military Entrance Processing Command Clinical Management Branch and approved by the Director.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check to maintain the position for which hired. This position requires a National Agency Check with Written Inquiries (NACI).
- Successful completion of applicable Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS Training is required to access the MHS GENESIS System within 30 days of on-boarding and/or as required
- Term employment is subject to a one-year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.

Basic Requirements for Physician Assistant:
Education: Graduation from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Certification: Successful completion of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination; must maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for Continuing Medical Education (CME) and re-certification.
Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician Assistant from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Exemption: You are exempt from the license requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0603 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Experience: A minimum of one full year of work experience as a certified physician assistant which includes obtaining medical history, performing examinations, and interpreting diagnostic testing. This definition of experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
