Duties

Major Duties GS-6: You may serve on a field crew responsible for monitoring a variety of wildlife species and their habitats, including piping plovers; conducting surveys for various mammalian species including black bear activity; installing and tending to acoustic monitoring equipment in remote field locations (frog and/or bat monitoring); monitoring campgrounds for problem bear and/or raccoons; leading a crew of volunteers, making educational contacts with visitors, and assisting with other natural resource program areas as needed, under the direction of a field crew supervisor. Principle duties will include recognizing and documenting piping plover breeding behaviors; identifying piping plover nest scrapes, locating piping plover nest sites, and implanting protective management actions; assisting with the Integrated Pest Management program; collecting field data and recording the data into established or new databases; and collecting GPS and GIS data in the field. Positions at the GS-6 level will assist a GS-7 crew lead with directing the field crew. Successful applicants will serve on teams that may include permanent and seasonal NPS staff, interns, volunteers, and staff from other agencies. They may be asked to occasionally lead volunteers in selected projects or work independently. Overnight backcountry camping for 5-10 day periods can be expected once a month or more. Global positioning systems, aerial photographs, topographic maps, and/or compass may be used in navigation. A portion of time will be dedicated to project logistics and preparatory ground work, equipment aquisition/maintenance, data entry, preparation of Field and Project Reports, and conducting administrative tasks in an office setting. Major Duties GS-7: This positions is located within the Division of Natural Resource Management at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. You will serve as a program lead to implement new and established natural resource management projects involving integrated pest management (IPM), piping plover protection, and BARK Ranger volunteers, with an emphasis on visitor education. The position will work closely with other divisions to respond to a variety of pest management issues in park facilities, campgrounds, and in the field; conduct campground roves to educate campers about food storage policies; and monitor and track reports of habituated wildlife. Duties will include training and coordinating volunteers; identification of a variety of shorebirds and mammals; collecting field data, recording field data in established or new databases; implementing prevention and control strategies to manage pest species; providing outreach/education content for social media posts; coordinating outreach and media contacts; and preparing annual project reports. A portion of time will be dedicated to project logistics and preparatory ground work, equipment inventory and maintenance, data entry, preparation of field and project reports, tracking volunteer hours, and performing administrative duties in an office setting. The duties of this position require hiking off trail in forest and dune environments where the terrain is uneven, steep at times, and hiking for long periods of time along shoreline exposed to sun, wind, and rain. There is possibility of contact with stinging insects, poison ivy, and various other hazards from variable climatic conditions. Numerous trips using a NPS boat operated by a NPS boat operator or commercial ferry to conduct work on the Lakeshore's islands will occur. Staff may be hiking as much as 10 miles per day in various types of terrain while carrying backpacks, tools, and equipment. Some assignments will require being prepared to camp overnight for several days in the backcountry. Weather conditions may vary from cold (20-15 degrees F.), snowy, rainy and windy in the spring and fall to sunny, hot 95-100 degrees F.) and humid in the summer. Work may be performed throughout the Lakeshore including the Manitou Islands. You must be willing to work throughout the Lakeshore including the islands for periods up to 10 days at a time. AREA INFORMATION: GOVERNMENT HOUSING IS AVAILABLE This position is located within the Department of Interior, National Park Service at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Empire, Michigan. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is within the beautiful scenic resort area on the northeastern shores of Lake Michigan. Housing, medical facilities, shopping, churches, banks, day care, recreational activities, schools, and colleges are readily available within a 30 mile radius, and laundry is available within a 18-25 miles from park headquarters in Empire. High temperatures average between 70-80 degrees in the summer and low temperatures average between 10-20 degrees in winter. Government housing may be available for rent. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/07/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Ability to assist in leading a group of less skilled workers (paid and unpaid) in established natural resource wildlife management programs; Overseeing crews to include scheduling, supplies; Coordinating endangered species management; surveying, monitoring, and managing piping plovers or other sensitive shorebird populations; data collection techniques; Implementing and developing protocols for wildlife management; Coordinating mammalian trapping activities; use of specialized resource management activity software; and the ability to communicate orally and in writing. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year (18 semester hours or equivalent) of graduate level study that directly applies to the position such as wildlife management, wildlife conservation. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Internships not completed as a part of your educational curriculum, and recorded on your transcript, will not be considered qualifying as education. However, it may be considered qualifying for specialized education.
