Duties

MAJOR DUTIES GS-5: You may serve on a field crew responsible for monitoring a variety of wildlife species and their habitats, including piping plovers; conducting surveys for various mammalian species including black bear activity; installing and tending to acoustic monitoring equipment in remote field locations (frog and/or bat monitoring); monitoring campgrounds for problem bear and/or raccoons; leading a crew of volunteers, making educational contacts with visitors, and assisting with other natural resource program areas as needed, under the direction of a field crew supervisor. Principle duties will include recognizing and documenting piping plover breeding behaviors; identifying piping plover nest scrapes, locating piping plover nest sites, and implanting protective management actions; assisting with the Integrated Pest Management program; collecting field data and recording the data into established or new databases; and collecting GPS and GIS data in the field. Successful applicants will serve on teams that may include permanent and seasonal NPS staff, interns, volunteers, and staff from other agencies. They may be asked to occasionally lead volunteers in selected projects or work independently. Overnight backcountry camping for 5-10 day periods can be expected once a month or more. Global positioning systems, aerial photographs, topographic maps, and/or compass may be used in navigation. A portion of time will be dedicated to project logistics and preparatory ground work, equipment acquisition/maintenance, data entry, preparation of Field and Project Reports, and conducting administrative tasks in an office setting. Work may be performed throughout the Lakeshore including the Manitou Islands. You must be willing to work throughout the Lakeshore including the islands for periods up to 10 days at a time. Physical Demands: These positions involve strenuous outdoor activity. You must be able to perform strenuous field work under all conditions (windy/cold, hot/humid, wet, deep sand, steep terrain). You must be in excellent physical condition (able to hike 9 or more miles in various terrain; able to carry a 50-pound backpack), have the ability to use a compass and read topographic maps, be prepared to camp overnight for several days in the backcountry, and work alone and serve as a member of a field crew. AREA INFORMATION: GOVERNMENT HOUSING IS AVAILABLE. This position is located within the Department of Interior, National Park Service at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Empire, Michigan. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is within the beautiful scenic resort area on the northeastern shores of Lake Michigan. Housing, medical facilities, shopping, churches, banks, day care, recreational activities, schools, and colleges are readily available within a 30 mile radius, and laundry is available within a 18-25 miles from park headquarters in Empire. High temperatures average between 70-80 degrees in the summer and low temperatures average between 10-20 degrees in winter. Government housing may be available for rent. Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/07/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: assists in conducting wildlife censuses and surveys assembling information on wildlife population; use of natural resource management field data collecting techniques; research activity or control program work; Monitoring and assisting in control of wildlife (capture, tags, gathering data); enters and retrieves data from GIS; maintains and organizes computer databases related to natural resource management. You must include hours per week worked on your resume for each employer or volunteer experience to document specialized experience. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, mathematics. NOTE: At least six semester hours of the education must have been in courses directly related to wildlife conservation, ornithology, zoology, entomology, wildlife management, or mammalogy. If you are qualifying based on education, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts. -OR- Combination of education and experience as described above. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. Determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level. Then determine education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for GS-5. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-5. For example, 6 month of specialized experience (50% of the specialized experience requirement) and 3 years of education above high school with at least 12 semester hours related to the position and 3 hours directly related to the position (50 percent of the education requirement) would be considered qualifying. NOTE: If you are qualifying based in part, upon education, you MUST submit a copy of your transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
