This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Duties
The Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (IR) oversees and manages the overall technical and administrative operations of a large multidisciplinary Interventional Radiology (IR) and Radiology Procedural Section to meet the needs of the patients and overall good of the service. Plans, directs, and controls the technical and administrative programs and leads staff IR technologists, including contrast technologists. Understands the position is non-supervisory, and works as colleagues with other IR technologists to complete required tasks.
The Lead IR Technologist employs and executes actions which will guarantee high quality imaging, quality performance of subordinate staff, and to assure that the utmost quality of care is delivered in the IR Section. S/he is responsible for the overall direction and coordination of subordinate work activities and functions, assures that subordinate senior and junior IR technologists effectively carry out policies to achieve management objectives and are enforcing the Radiology Service's goals and objectives. Ensures that the work plans are carried out and communicated.
Major duties include but are not limited to:
Member of the Radiology Service Quality Assurance Committee and oversees the IR technical performance improvement measures. Evaluates finding and prepares reports recommending program effectiveness improvements. Thinks and act innovatively, looks beyond current reality to forecast future direction, takes risks, challenges traditional assumptions, and solves problems creatively. In addition, the incumbent has the ability and knowledge to participate in the Medical Center's Root Cause Analysis (RCA) program, as it relates to issue pertinent to the IR and Radiology Procedural Section and follows the VA National Center for Patient Safety and Healthcare Failure Mode Effect Analysis Process.
Coordinate program activities that affect clinical, research, teaching, and administrative functions. The incumbent actively promotes professional conduct and loyalty to the VA and must be professional, cooperative and be able to work with other employees.
Perform interventional radiology examinations of the entire human anatomy in addition to performing diagnostic radiology when needed. Diagnostic radiology exams include routine to moderately complex examination procedures.
Incumbent will determine if problems can be corrected independently or needs to be referred to the Biomedical Engineering personnel and/ or appropriate vendor for repair. During irregular hours of operation, the technologist may be required to make this determination
Maintains proper supplies (injectables, administration sets, etc.) injects contrast as authorized by departmental protocols. Ensures supplies are re-ordered as needed. Trains technologists on process of re-ordering supplies.
Assists radiologist when performing CT Guided Biopsies and aspirations. Sets up equipment. Prepares slides and equipment when laboratory personnel are not available.
Assigns and explains work requirements and operating instructions to colleagues. Sets deadlines and establishes the sequence of work operations to be followed.
In conjunction with the Chief Technologist, Chief Administrator, or Assistant Chief Technologist, analyzes and determines staffing requirements based on past, present, and future workload patterns, develops work plans of colleagues and monitors the status of their work in relation to the overall schedule requirements, including unanticipated or emergency requirements.
Reviews and analyzes work accomplishments, cost, utilization of colleagues to evaluate work progress, and anticipates and avoids possible problems by recommending corrective action to the Chief Radiology Technologist, Chief Radiology Administrator, and Chief of Service.
Participates in quality improvement as directed, in order to ensure that the Radiology Service is in compliance with all performance measures established by the Radiology Service, Medical Center, VCARE, VA Central Office, TJC, OSHA, SOARS, and Inspector General.

Basic Requirements:

Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).]
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
