This position is located in the Office of the Medical Center Director of the James J. Peters VA Medical Center, Bronx, New York.. This position functions as a Staff Assistant in the Office of the Medical Center Director with responsibility for providing administrative support to one or more of the senior staff officials.
Duties
Duties may include but are not limited to:
The employee conducts special studies of administrative issues as requested by the Medical Center Director, the Chief of Staff, or other members of the Director's senior staff. Analyzes and prepares program status reports for review at all levels and conducts systematic reviews to assure compliance with external regulations.
The employee is responsible for the coordination of corrective actions to eliminate deficiencies, collaborates with supervisors on maintaining current policies consistent with VHA and JCAHO directives, and provides support and administrative guidance regarding administrative matters. Also performs administrative work, which includes management of an office's schedule or day-to-day plans. Develops routine plans or schedules using standard references and existing information. Based on defined objectives, determines specific steps, input required, and/or milestones. Identifies schedule/time required, and estimates resources required.
The employee assists in the management of Director's office and ensures that the practices and procedures used by secretaries in subordinate offices are consistent with those of the Director's office. Recommends changes in administrative policies, as necessary. Devises and implements office procedures and practices to be used by secretaries in subordinate offices.
The employee responds to inquiries and administrative problems brought to the Office of the Director by members of the staff and officials of the agency's central office, State and local governments, other hospitals and organizations, other Federal agencies, and Congressional staff.
The Staff Assistant maintains the calendar and schedule for the Associate Chief of Staff and acts as a liaison or handles the communication with persons and groups within and outside of the Medical Center.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/08/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-9 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-7. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-7 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: experience with applying analytical and evaluative techniques to the identification, consideration, and resolution of issues or problems of a procedural or factual nature; experience using qualitative and quantitative analytical techniques; use automated word processing, database management, spreadsheet, presentation, and other software packages. Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, series and grades for all federal positions held, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. OR,
Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a master's degree, equivalent graduate degree, 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or an LL.B. or J.D., in a related field. Transcripts required.. OR,
Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education beyond 1 full year or 18 semester hours. Experience must be detailed, and transcripts required.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary, although some slight physical effort may be required.
