Employees in this assignment serve in a Dietitian (Clinical) full performance level position within the Clinical Section of Nutrition & Food Service (NFS) serving as the medical nutrition expert. They are autonomous in their work in applying evidenced-based nutrition practice guidelines for all patients, including those with complex medical and nutritional needs.

Duties

Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties for the Clinical Dietitian as related to the GS-11 level include but are not limited to: Nutritional Care: Conducts a comprehensive nutrition assessment for patients Develops and implements Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to address the nutrition diagnosis, evaluates and monitors the effectiveness and outcomes Calculates nutritional requirements (calories, protein, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, electrolytes, fluid) and necessary diet restrictions or food/drug interactions May require a therapeutic plan for specialized nutrition support, including enteral and parenteral nutrition for patients with complex medical and nutritional needs Utilizes assessment and evaluation techniques that consider age-specific needs as well as cultural, religious, and ethnic concerns Orders labs, diets and consults per Scope of Practice/Clinical privileges Evaluates and monitors the effectiveness and outcome of medical nutrition therapy interventions Documents MNT in the medical record Nutrition Education: Assesses educational needs and provides nutrition counseling for individuals and groups, incorporating a learning approach that considers the cultural, religious, educational, and medical situation of the patient Evaluates achievement of learning objectives by the patient and/or family. Adapts nutrition education materials and counseling techniques to client's level of understanding, which frequently involves simplifying complex dietary restrictions Provides appropriate follow-up in accordance with patient's treatment goals, referring patients for outpatient counseling, community or home health service as appropriate Assists in the education of dietetic students and interns Participates in community projects and education as needed/assigned Business Functions: Maintains productivity standards and practices, effective time management, and prioritizing of tasks Maintains accurate record keeping of daily clinical activities, including information for scheduling and billing Participates in the orientation and training of new dietitians as necessary Quality Improvement/Research: Ensures continuous improvement of safe and quality care of Veterans Is involved in Performance Improvement activities by participating in the development of nutritional care indicators, evaluation criteria, collecting continuous quality improvement data, monitoring outcomes and initiating corrective actions Participates in planning and developing nutrition-related policies, procedures, and goals Member of the Health Care Team: Serves as the nutrition expert on the interdisciplinary treatment team which includes physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals Advises interdisciplinary health care team of nutritional recommendations, goals, and efficacy of nutrition therapy Actively participates in formal and informal interdisciplinary team meetings Presents seminars, workshops, and lectures to convey current nutrition information on new and changing concepts Professional Development: Maintains dietetic registration and continuing education requirements Develops and implements an individualized plan for professional growth and development including participation in professional organizations and activities, workshops, seminars, and staff development programs Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm Telework: Not available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency. Dietitian candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). Registration: All applicants must hold the RDN credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Note: Applicants who hold the RDN credential have met the education requirement (e.g. bachelor's degree or higher) of CDR, as such this occupation is considered professional and scientific with a positive education requirement and the procedures in Part I, Chapter 4 of this Handbook will be followed when applying Veteran's preference. Grade Determinations: Dietitian (Clinical), GS-11 Experience. At least one year of experience as an RDN equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-09), Examples of experience include but are not limited to: conduct nutrition assessments using the NCP. They develop skills in applying evidence-based nutrition practice guidelines, interpreting research and utilizing whole health principles to develop patient-centered goals and improve outcomes; utilize virtual care technology to improve access to care; maintain accurate record keeping of daily clinical activities and patient encounters using approved systems; comply with TJC and other accrediting agency standards to ensure safe and quality patient care. They collect data related to performance improvement activities within Nutrition and Food Services (NFS) and assist in implementing new initiatives; collaborate with the Food Service Section to enhance the Veterans' dining experience, support patient satisfaction and serve as a liaison between clinical units and the food service section. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: (a) Skill in delivering patient care using the NCP (e.g., assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring and evaluation. (b) Skill in interpreting research to apply evidence-based nutrition practices to improve patient outcomes. (c) Skill in developing patient-centered goals. (d) Skill in analyzing data for performance improvement studies. (e) Skill in collaborating with stakeholders. (f) Ability to comply with various accrediting, regulatory and agency authorities. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11. . Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Some work may require movement between offices, hospitals, warehouses, and similar areas for meetings and to conduct work. Work may also require walking/standing, in conjunctions with travel to and attendance at meetings and/or conferences away from the work site. Incumbent may carry and lift light items weighing less than 15 pounds.
