The VA New York Harbor Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance and repair of equipment and building systems which serve the entire Medical Center. Including and not limited to, fire alarm system (including the fire sprinkler system), heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, electrical switch gear and the emergency generator system, steam distribution system, oxygen and other medical gas systems, elevator systems, etc.
Duties
The Maintenance Mechanic works under the general supervision of the Supervisor/Team Lead.
Performing a combination of maintenance, repair, modification, equipment operation and equipment inspection/certification involving diverse skills. Determines the type and extent of repairs or renovations needed, methods and techniques to use, parts or components required, and completes work typically with no check in progress. Ensures the end product meets all specified requirements.
Major duties include but not limited to:
Troubleshoots circuits, controls and systems to locate, repair and replace defective components.
Inspects and repairs the primary and secondary electrical distributor systems.
Diagnoses malfunctions and makes repairs on air conditioning systems and all related pumps, fans motors and associated piping.
Performs periodic maintenance and repairs to complicated high-pressure steam distribution systems and piping.
Expands existing wiring services and systems by installing controls, magnetic starters, thermostats, transformers, sockets, fixtures, outlets and switches.
Makes repairs and alterations of heating systems to include replacement of pressure relief and reducing valves.
Perform carpentry related repairs and maintenance such as ceiling tile replacements, ceiling grid, doors, doors hardware, locks, closures, windows, floors, furniture, and walls.
Perform plumbing related maintenance such as bathroom fixtures, eye wash, radiators, readings of water systems and bulk oxygen.
Performs installations, repairs and preventive maintenance for audio paging, and nurses call systems, TV antenna systems, fire alarm and all security notification systems.
Performs installations, repairs and preventive maintenance for TV antenna systems and security notification systems.
Performs periodic maintenance and repairs to complicated high-pressure steam distribution systems and piping.
Expands existing wiring services and systems by installing controls, magnetic starters, thermostats, transformers, sockets, fixtures, outlets and switches.
Makes repairs and alterations of heating systems to include replacement of pressure relief and reducing valves.

Physical Requirements: Work requires walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally handles items weighing up to 100 Pounds. Personal assistance and/or lifting devices are used when appropriate to prevent injury.
Working Conditions: - Works inside and outside, exposed to dirt, sewage, dust, grease, fumes, and refrigerant gases. Is subject to injury from use of hand and power tools, and to burns, cuts, bruises and electrical shock. May be required to wear and/or use protective clothing and equipment in accordance with established health and safety regulations and procedures.
