Position is located in the Maintenance and Repair Buildings and Grounds unit at the VA Extended Care Center in Queens. Work involves the maintenance, construction, repair and modification of wooden items and structures throughout the facility. Performs as a journeyman carpenter a variety of repairs, alterations, installations and fabrication of articles of wood, repairs and installation or hardware, installation and repair of metal shelves cabinets and partitions.

Duties

Duties include and are not limited to: Plans the layout from a work order to select appropriate type and quantity of materials and completes assigned work in accordance with established journeyman carpenter standards of quality and productivity assignments include: Repair of articles of wood, such as desks, chairs, and patient care, equipment, matching existing parts with wood of the same quality and texture in order to blend appearance in the finished article. Fabricates items, laminated with formica, from given sketches and blue prints. Fabrication of special items of wood, such as bed boards, cabinets, frames and stands for exhibits, and benches for locker rooms, laboratories, etc. For extensive alterations, builds forms, erects scaffolds, bracing and other supports; cuts holes for setting windows and door casings. Cuts and fits new doors in door case (buck), mortise locks and butts to' doors. Maintains doors in good operating condition, including such types as exterior and interior wood, metal, glass, and aluminum, and overhead, single and double swinging styles. Repairs broken or marred full panel doors. Refits doors in metal casing affected by the settling of the building. Repairs such hardware as handles, hinges, locks, holders and closers, fits new hardware in buck or casings. Overhauls all types of door closets by removing, cleaning, replacing worn and broken parts, refilling, replacing and making adjustments where necessary. Installs metal partitions; installs and repairs metal shelving and cabinets; installs metal lath and various types of ceiling material, such as celotex, tile or acoustical metal. Services locks on screens. Repairs or installs window shades and venetian blinds. Installation of dry walls and acoustical ceiling panels. Exercises skill and knowledge in the application of acceptable carpentry techniques and methods. Must have skill in the usage of hand and power carpentry tools including table, radial, band and saber electric saws, planer, jointer, mortiser, drill press, electric drill and sander and router. Sets up adjusts and adapts tools to accomplish required tasks. Must know shop mathematics, basic knowledge of trigonometry in measuring angles and laying out scaling dimensions-including fractions. Maintains tools in good working order. Must be able to make measurements using rules and measures. Must be able to read and work from blue prints and sketches. Responsible for accurate measurements required for assigned work and for proper art: and fit for installations, fabrications. Must have journeyman carpenter skill in carrying out work from work orders or sketches planning material and tools as needed to perform the job on his own. Must have knowledge of terminology as applied to the trade. Meets the needs of customers while supporting the Medical Center and Service missions. Consistently communicates and treats customers (patients, visitors, volunteers, and all Medical Center staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Provides the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately. Works from sketches or blue prints and is responsible for the proper selection of proper materials, hardware and equipment. Incumbent performs installations, modifications and repairs with little or no checks during progress. Supervisor reviews overall work to insure that it meets trade and code requirements. Follow safe work practices and procedures, including use of personal protective equipment. Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, 8am - 4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter/PD04458A This occupation is being considered for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive (CSI). Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI. The amount of lump sum CSI is determined based on appointment date and may be pro-rated as determined by the end date of the CSI. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI.

Works on ladders, requiring stretching; sometimes works in cramped or awkward positions. Uses dollies to move heavy objects, but may lift objects ranging in weight about 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Incumbent works in all hospital areas including contagious disease areas, ceilings, pits, crawl spaces, and tunnels. Works on scaffolds and high ladders, and sometimes under outside weather conditions.
