About the Position: The incumbent will serve as a Firefighter for DES (Directorate of Emergency Services) in Fort Riley KS.

Duties
Serve as a crewmember protecting life and property.
Respond to automatic fire alarms, natural gas leaks, wildland fires, and fights fires.
Firefighting tasks of moderate difficulty involving structures, equipment, and facilities; crashed and burning aircraft; and fuel, chemical, and brush fires.
Perform fire protection inspections in areas where no unusual fire hazards are expected, and the potential severity is low.
Perform maintenance, operational, housekeeping, emergency, and stand by duties.
Operate radios, fire reporting systems (Emergency Reporting), and computer modem for hazardous material information, and perform maintenance tasks on firefighting apparatus, equipment, and facilities.
Serve as a first responder to medical emergencies and perform emergency medical procedures.
Perform initial and on-going focused patient assessment and physical examination; determines priority of patient care based on assessment findings; takes, records, and monitors patients baseline vital signs.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Employee may be subject to periodic (e.g. annual) medical examinations following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
- Heavy physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects such as cylinders and extinguishers weighing 45 lbs or more. Employee may be required to lift/carry personnel in emergency situations.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- Works a 72-hour weekly/144-hour pay period tour of duty.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles up to one ton.
- Duties require full use of both arms, both legs, and fingers to bend, turn, pull, crawl, kneel, and climb.
- Must be able to complete tasks such as using aerial ladders, firefighting equipment controls, arranging/connecting hoses, rappelling, operation of fire trucks and all types of rescue operations, etc.
- Position includes a continuing requirement to satisfy job-oriented training.
- During rescue operations, incumbent may come into contact with human blood or other potential infectious materials which may result in possible exposure to blood borne pathogens.
- This position is covered as a rigorous/primary position.
- Employee must remain clean-shaven to insure integrity of mask fit for breathing apparatus.

In order to qualify, you must meet the educaton and/or expereince requirements described below. To qualify at the GS-04 level:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1). Control and/or extinguish fries to prevent damage and injuries; 2). Provide support during rescue operations to prevent/minimize injuries and/or accidents; and 3). Coordinate hazardous material operations to prevent damages.
OR
Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
To qualify at the GS-05 level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1). Fight fires to save lives and prevent damages to structures; 2). Rescue victims from injury while securing transportation to hospitals; and 3). Detect potential fire hazards to reduce harmful threats to society.

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages. To qualify at the GS-06 level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1). Operate fire communications equipment to facilitate the coordination of life saving incidents; 2). Control hazardous materials incidents to prevent injuries to people and damages to structures; and 3). Serve as a first responder to medical emergencies to save lives.
Time in Grade Requirement for the GS-06 level: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05). No substitution of education for experience is permitted to qualify for the GS-06 level.
To qualify at the GS-07 level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1). Provide training regarding fire protection and prevention to increase awareness when preparing for real life emergencies; 2) Conduct initial and on-going focused patient assessment and physical examination to assess victim's status; and 3). Inspect buildings for hazards to prevent injuries and damages; and 4). Serve as a firefighter utilizing all types of rescue operations to protect life and property.
Time in Grade Requirement for the GS-07 level: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06). No substitution of education for experience is permitted to qualify for the GS-07 level.
Selective Placement Factor for the GS-04, 05, 06, and 07 positions:
Incumbent must be certified, at the time of employment, within the Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification System, Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (FSPQS)/ProBoard, or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).

Selective Placement Factor for the GS-04 position:
Must have the following certifications: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Hazardous Materials Operations.
Additionally, the employee must obtain and maintain Airport Firefighter Level and Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (CPR and AED) card within 12 months of appointment.
Selective Placement Factor for the GS-05 position: Must have the following certifications: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Hazardous Materials Operations. Must have and maintain a current Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (CPR and AED) card.
Selective Placement Factor for the GS-06 position: Must have the following certifications: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Hazardous Materials Operations, Driver/Operator Pumper, and Driver Operator ARFF. Must have and maintain a current Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (CPR and AED) card. Must obtain and maintain NWCG Type II firefighter (S130/190) within 12 months of hire date.
Selective Placement Factor for the GS-07 position: Must have the following certifications: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Hazardous Materials Operations, Driver/Operator Pumper, Driver/Operator ARFF, Driver/Operator Mobile Water Supply and Driver/Operator Aerial. Must have and maintain a current Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (CPR and AED) card. Must possess and maintain current National Registry and/or State Emergency Medical Technician certification. Must obtain and maintain NWCG Type II firefighter (S190/130) within 12 months of hire date.
