Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team in the United States Attorneys Office for the Southern District of West Virginia serving as a Supervisory Paralegal Specialist for the Criminal Division. Typical work assignments will include: Supervising and managing a staff of legal support professionals; Distributing tasks to employees based on the complexity and nature of assignments involved and setting deadlines for work to be performed; Advising employees of the performance requirements of their positions, completing midyear progress reviews and preparing the annual performance appraisal for each employee; Providing paralegal support and legal research support during all phases of the prosecution of complex criminal cases to one or more Assistant United States Attorneys; Performing substantive research, evaluation and analysis of a variety of specialized legal topics and points of law, utilizing multiple online legal systems; Drafting initial legal and administrative briefs and motions; and developing legal arguments, correspondence; and Preparing and organizing trial exhibits, documents, memoranda, reports, and correspondence relating to cases. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

  • If selected, you will be subject to the satisfactory completion of a one year supervisory or managerial probationary period unless this requirement has been met previously.

Qualifications

GS-12: To be eligible at the GS-12 level, applicants must have one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as defined below. Specialized experience is defined as experience: Applying advanced knowledge of legal principles and concepts to interpret a body of law, regulations, precedents, and practices in support of trial proceedings. Examples of specialized experience include: 1) Assisting attorneys in on topics such as local law, court procedures, legal research, documentation preparation, case management and office procedures; 2) Delivering formal or informal presentations regarding legal or administrative procedures to appropriate audiences; 3) Preparing assigned cases in accordance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, precedents, policies, office practices and established procedures; 4) Providing verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate and explain findings and recommendations to assigned attorneys. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.
