Duties
Performs the full range of aid type duties and a variety of technical duties in support of wildlife programs, such as inventories of wildlife and their habitat.
Performs on-the-ground surveys of wildlife habitat, analyzes data, prepares reports and makes recommendations to management on the findings.
Determines likely impacts of minerals exploration, development, and operation, realty actions, recreational activities, forestry and range development or improvement projects on wildlife and their habitat.
Reviews forestry, watershed, and range improvement project proposals for compatibility with wildlife needs and recommends to Biologists construction specifications or modifications needed to safeguard or enhance wildlife habitat quality.
To perform duties of this position requires the use of motor vehicles. In most cases this will be a 4-wheel drive vehicle or UTV.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-5 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:
1) Experience: Possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-4 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Record data relating to wildlife studies; inventory water, winter ranges, and/or upland game bird habitat; participate in banding, tagging and releasing a variety of wildlife; perform vegetative work in wildlife habitat areas (planting bulbs, brush and seeds); enter and retrieve data from automated databases.

2) Education: A bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to wildlife biology studies. The education must be obtained in an accredited college or university.

3) Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours). The combined total must equal 100%.
To qualify for the GS-6 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:
1) Experience: Possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-5 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Participate in inventory of wildlife and their habitats; collect data on wildlife; participate in wildlife habitat improvement projects or construction projects; compile and organize survey data in files, prepare narratives, and report on overlay of areas inventoried; gather samples and assist in analyzing samples; enter and retrieve data from automated databases.

2) Education: One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework directly related to the work of wildlife biology. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. The education must be obtained in an accredited college or university.

3) Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate level education. The combined total must equal 100%.
To qualify for the GS-7 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:
1) Experience: Possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-6 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Research, compile, and tabulate a full range of wildlife inventory data; lead lower graded technicians in the collection of field data; interpret aerial photos, landsat imagery, and topographic maps to determine land use/vegetation distribution; process field samples and/or specimens; enter and retrieve data from automated databases.

2) Education: One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework directly related to the work of wildlife biology. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. The education must be obtained in an accredited college or university.

3) Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate level education. The combined total must equal 100%.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.
Work Environment: When doing fieldwork, you may be subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests or animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.
Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-6 & GS-7.
